The Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors hit a scoring drought in last Saturday’s game against host Washburn, as the Beavers overtook SACS, 59-38.
The Beavers held a 16-12 opening-quarter lead and then outscored SACS, 16-5 in the second period for a 32-17 halftime lead.
“The girls came out strong,” said SACS coach Jessica Porter. “We played some great pressure defense and we were attacking Washburn’s 1-3-1 half-court zone. But, in the second period, our shots stopped falling and we were not able to set up our pressure defense in the full court.”
The Lady Warriors made a short run in the third period, cutting into Washburn’s lead, 42-32, but that was as close as they could get.
“In a half-court game, we had a hard time stopping [Rachel] Palmer,” said Porter. “Being a very young and inexperienced team we have a lot of areas we need to improve on.”
The Lady Warriors have been struggling rebounding-wise and Porter hopes to turn that around.
“We are fairly small in the post,” she said. “We really need to focus more on boxing out. I think that with each game, the girls will gain more experience and come together more as a group.”
Brittany Charette and Liz Goodall led the Lady Warriors with 14 points apiece, while Palmer keyed Washburn with 18 and nine rebounds.
