Houlton Parks and Rec offers winter activities

 Walk Away Winter
The S.T.O.P. (Southern Aroostook Tobacco-Free Outreach Project) and the Houlton Parks and Recreation Department will once again sponsor the “Walk Away Winter” Program.

The program will begin on Feb. 4 and run for eight weeks.
This program is held at the Houlton Recreation Department and encourages participants to get out and walk the winter away. Open hours for walking are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Gentle Memorial Building.
Participants of this program will log in the amount of time they have walked each day they are at the rec center, with prizes to be awarded to the top five walkers at the end of the program. This program is free to the public.
Participants can sign up by calling the Houlton Recreation Department by Feb. 4 at 532-1310.

Girl’s cheerleading program
The Houlton Parks and Recreation Department will be sponsoring a Girls’ Cheerleading Program for girls in grades 4-6.  Registrations have been sent through the local school systems. Registration forms may be picked up at the Houlton Recreation Center, as well.
Deadline for registration is Feb. 1. Cost is $20 for Houlton residents and $30 for non-Houlton residents.  Girls will need to have both dark blue or black shorts and sneakers.
The program will begin the week of Feb. 25 and run for six weeks.

Youth basketball programs
The Houlton Parks and Recreation Department is now accepting registrations for four youth basketball programs for the following age groups: 5-6 grade girls, 5-6 grade boys, 7-8 grade girls and 7-8 grade boys.
Registrations have been distributed throughout the local school systems. Registration forms may also by picked up at the Houlton Recreation Center.
Registration is required to participate in this program.  Deadline registration is Feb. 1.

Discount tickets to Big Rock
All winter long the Houlton Parks & Recreation Department will be offering discount tickets to Big Rock Ski Area in Mars Hill.
Big Rock Junior (ages 6-17) lift tickets will be sold for $17, while adult lift tickets are $22.
All lift tickets are good for all ages and are valid any day Big Rock is open during the 2008 season.
Tickets may be purchased at the main office at the Houlton Recreation Department located at 128 Main St.  Make checks payable to the Houlton Rec Department.

February Fun Day scheduled
February Fun Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18 at the Houlton Recreational Center for grades K-6.
Cost is $6 per child. The day will consist of games, contests and crafts. A pizza lunch will be served.
Registration is required, and the day is limited to 30 children.
