Robinson’s free throws win game; Lady Cougars lose
Last Friday night in Stacyville, the game turned into a showdown in the second half, as the Katahdin Cougars hosted the Southern Aroostook Warriors in a clash between two postseason teams.
Katahdin pulled out the win, 49-47.

SACS’ Dakota Sleeper shouldered the scoring load for the Warriors in the first half of action, with his interior penetration, as he dodged and darted his way to 20 points, while giving his team a 34-25 halftime lead.
But, the Cougars slowed the pace in the second half, changing their man-to-man defense into a half court zone, closing the middle of the lane, as Katahdin cut into the Warriors’ lead, 41-37 at the end of the third. In the final period, it was Katahdin freshman Brandon Robinson who hit two clutch free throws to break a 47-all tie to lift his team to the win. But, the Cougars’ defense held the Warriors to six points in the fourth quarter of play.
Evan McCarthy and Tom Anderson led Katahdin in scoring with 13 and 12 points, respectively. For the Warriors, Sleeper had 25 and Colby Clark added 10 more.
The Warriors were playing shorthanded, and the Cougars were without Marshall Davis, who had worked his way into the starting lineup recently.
Both teams will be in playoff action tonight, weather permitting. The Cougars will host No. 9 Machias at 6:30 p.m. in Stacyville, while the Warriors travel to Shead for a 6 p.m. game.
The Ashland Hornets got past the visiting Cougars, 61-52 in last Thursday’s game.

The score was close throughout the game, as the Hornets held a 28-27 advantage at the break before the game was knotted at 41-all after three periods. The Hornets used 20-11 scoring in the decisive final quarter to earn the win.
McCarthy led Katahdin with 16 points, while Ethan Qualey netted 12 and Josh Guiggey added 11 more.
In girl’s action, the Lady Cougars were defeated by visiting Bangor Christian, 56-43.
The Patriots built a 24-18 halftime lead and extended it to 41-30 over the third en route to the win.
Olivia McNally poured in a game-high 24 points, including six 3-pointers for Katahdin.
Lady Vikes sunk
The East Grand Lady Vikings fell to host Machias last Thursday, 81-35.
GHCA’s Jeremy Budd and Hodgdon’s Paul Griffin battle.
The Lady Vikes opened the game in the lead, 14-2, but the Bulldogs outscored them, 27-6 in the second period to break the game open.
Kelsey Daoust netted 20 points, while Courtney Lloyd tossed in 11 for East Grand.
Lady Warriors fall
The Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors were defeated by the Hornet girls, 66-48 last Wednesday in Ashland.
The Hornets held a 17-3 opening lead, but the Lady Warriors climbed back into the game, trailing 29-25 at halftime. In the third, the Hornets outscored SACS, 21-14 behind Mindy Chasse’s eight-point effort.
Chasse finished the game with a game-high 27 points and 12 rebounds, while cousin Whitney Flint tossed in 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
For the Lady Warriors, Evangeline Goodall had 12 points and Lauren McGary scored 10.
GHCA teams win;
Hawks downed
The Greater Houlton Christian Academy teams both picked up wins last week.
The Eagles grabbed their first win of the season over East Grand, 83-66 before losing a lopsided contest last Thursday to host Hodgdon.
Against East Grand, the Eagles led 19-12 to open the game and then went on a 27-16 scoring run in the second for a 46-28 halftime lead. The Eagles had a good third period, extending their lead to 64-45 en route to the win.

Chad Duff poured in a game-high 34 points, while Zach Straubel rang up 22 points and Micah Wiley tossed in 13 more for the winners.
For East Grand, who was without the services of Tyler Morse, Kaleb Dicker had a season-high 31 points.
On the girls’ side, the Lady Eagles raced away with a 60-15 victory over East Grand.
The Lady Eagles held host East Grand scoreless in the second period to build a 38-4 lead en route to the win.
Kari Brewer scored 20 points, while Kasi Parker dropped in 12 and Selena Michaud added 10 more for the Lady Eagles.
For East Grand, Kelsey Daoust had 10 points.
On Friday night, the Hodgdon Hawks were handed a 71-39 loss by host Madawaska.
The Hawks fell behind 18-1 to open the game and trailed 35-16 at halftime, and could never recover as the Owls cruised.
Robert Crane led Hodgdon with 17 points.
Last Tuesday, the Hawks lost to host Fort Fairfield, 75-33.
The Tigers took a 41-20 lead into the break and extended their advantage over three, 56-29.
Crane scored 11 points and Andrew McGillicuddy chipped in with eight more for the Hawks.
