PRESQUE ISLE – The Old Town girls had regained ground and passed the Wildcats by one point in last Friday’s final regular season game at Presque Isle High School. However, the PIHS girls proved they wanted the victory more when point guard Sarah Porter laid in the ball for the final score, 45-44 Wildcats.
“Old Town slowly chipped away, and took their first lead with about 45 seconds to go in the game,” explained head coach Jeff Hudson. “We came down, executed a play perfectly and Porter made a 15-foot jump shot with about 30 seconds to go.”
Allison Dean added triple three-pointer success to her statistics for the team-high of 15 points. Senior Amy Michaud put in 11 points during her final game on the Wildcat court.
The upset confirmed the Wildcat place in the preliminaries against Mattanawcook on Tuesday. While the Lynx have defeated the Wildcats three times this season, the squad will fight for a tournament berth.
“We have our work cut out for us, but we will give it everything we have and let the chips fall where they may,” said Hudson.
No scores were reported at presstime.
Porter captained the Wildcat effort to overcome Fort Kent last Wednesday, but the Warriors guarded their home turf for the final victory, 67-38.
Porter put up two three-pointers toward her 12-point total.
Another fourth quarter play changed the outcome in the final seconds of the following Presque Isle and Old Town boys’ matchup, but in favor of the Coyotes. Old Town’s Mamadou Ba put in a final layup and drew a foul to secure the win and knock Presque Isle from their number-one ranking.
Adam Kingsbury plowed in the PIHS scoring-high of 16 points. Russ Mortland added another 10 points.
The PIHS boys’ squad will host Mt. View today at 6 p.m. for their tournament position.
