MONTICELLO, Maine — Monticello residents were busy cooking cakes for a cause on Feb.8.
Parents and staff of the Wellington Elementary School held the annual Valentine’s Day Cake Auction to raise money for this year’s drama production.     Grade 1 teacher Nancy Wright said the school has been holding fund-raisers for the past several years in order to bring in a theater residency group for their students each spring. Wright said for five days, the children are coached and rehearse for their one-night performance — the price tag — $2,500.
“This is just one of the events that we do to raise money for the kids,” explained Wright. “Last year we had 60 cakes come in. Some of these cakes will go for as much as $100 or more.
“The Blue Moose enters a German chocolate cake and people wait for that,” she added.
The final tally for the auction was $2,400 — $250 of that was from funds collected through sales of the school’s calendars.
Residents attend the event, and also help choose the school’s King and Queen and Prince and Princess. Those chosen were King: Nathan Kilton (grade 2), Queen: Mikayla Fitzpatrick (grade 3), Prince: Chance Beaulieu and Princess: Tiffany Muncey.
The school will hold its drama production this spring.
