To the editor:
As the clock winds down on the ’08 basketball season, I find myself lingering for the last time on the court, waiting for the players to come out of the locker room. The talk among the parents is different this night. Rather than discussions of victory or defeat, there are random remarks of thankfulness, not that the season is over, but gratitude for God’s protection, school and community support, and coaches. Foremost, we are thankful for the One who gave these athletes unique abilities, health, and safety throughout the season. We praise Him for this.
We are grateful to administrators, board members, and teachers, who —in spite of inconveniences, extra expenses, and occasional missed class time —have recognized the benefits this demanding sport has for our children. As a teacher, I strive to challenge my students toward academic excellence, developing strong minds and successful citizens. I’m thankful that another school activity reinforces the same values we attempt to instill in our classrooms and homes.
People from “away” are amazed at the support and encouragement Aroostook County citizens offer their young people, whether it takes place in academics, music, or sports. What a thrill for our boys and girls to see highlights of their teams on WAGM Sports! The Houlton Pioneer Times is always there to report and share exciting images of local action. It’s amazing how game after game, the announcers at WHOU radio can put such a positive light on all the action they call. These representatives of the media are great examples, never degrading referee calls or inexperienced players, but highlighting examples of fine sportsmanship and athleticism. As the years pass, our athletes treasure these captured memories. We thank all of you for your tireless work.
Obviously, these games wouldn’t take place without dedicated coaches. It is no secret that you spend many hours with our sons and daughters building their stamina and strength. As parents, however, we are
aware of your attempts to build up these players so that their time on and off the court will bring glory to God.
Coach, we heard the firm, instructive words you shared on the sidelines and the encouragement that followed when the player gave the proper effort. We saw you hold back when you were frustrated. We noticed you run “side by side” with the players when you were “teaching them a lesson” in practice. We noticed you patiently waiting with our son in the emergency room. We heard you pray with our teams and pour out your soul. From a distance we saw you wrap your arms around that sweaty teenager saying, “I care about you and I’m here for you.”
We noticed you use your own money to fill the team van with gas. We suspect you paid for those extra uniforms with your own funds. The pizza, Chinese food, and cream puffs remind these players that caring is not just “talk” with you, it is an action. You’ve not only attempted to teach our athletes relentless man-to-man defense, a proper jump shot, and motion offense, but you’ve taught respect, perseverance, and grace in victory and defeat. God has placed you in the lives of these ballplayers to strengthen their character. Obviously, we know their lives are a work in progress, but we appreciate the efforts you’ve made to mold your players, our sons and daughters, into better human beings. You’ve led by example. So, Coach Cummings, Coach Gray, Coach Socoby, all your assistants, and all coaches across the County, as parents we say, “thank you.”
