Rotary ‘wheels’
The annual Rotary Supper/Auction will be held on Saturday, April 12, at the high school gymnasium with supper being served at 5 p.m. and the auction to follow. The supper menu will be a choice of roast beef or stuffed chicken breast with carrots, peas, baked potatoes, fried rice, salads, rolls, desserts and coffee, tea, sodas and water.
The auction will follow with crowd favorite auctioneer Tom Drew providing his services and special brand of entertainment for the benefit supper. The cost for the evening events is $10 for adults and $6 for ages 12 and under and tickets will be available from any Rotarian or at the door, with all proceeds going towards Washburn-area Rotary projects.
Co-chairs for this year’s event are Rotarians Barbara Turner and Larry Harrison. Some auction items include: a fun weekend for two at Moose Point Camps on Fish River, a beautiful garden bench, a $100 coupon for meals at Café Sorpreso, a subscription to the Swap Buy and Sell, a $50 certificate to Caron’s Lawn Care, a spring basket, an LED work light, a BBQ set, a Trailrunners hooded jacket, Washburn Beaver’s sweatshirt, a few clocks and hats, and an item from the Silver Basket, a gift basket of floral arrangement from Phil’s Florist, a few oil changes including some from Midas, and a four-piece gift set of fine Sheffield and certificates for tanning sessions. Cross stitch craft kits, coins and calendars will also be for sale, as well as a zippered messenger bag attaché case. There are over 150 items including many silent-auction items.
There will also be a few raffles throughout the event including savings bonds, among many other items.
This auction is an important fund-raiser for the Washburn Rotary, and some recent examples of their work include making a donation to the Salmon Brook Historical Society for the barn renovations in memory of past Rotarians Mac Holts and Ray Carter. The group also sponsored a student from the area to attend the TAMC Survivor Camp this coming summer.
They made a donation to Meals on Wheels which will be matched by Rotary’s Finestein Foundation.
They have also made a donation to a Rotary project in Africa, and this amount will be doubled by Rotary International. It was also voted that Ellen Fitzsimmons, Charlotte Griffin and Cindy Richendollar will be attending the PETS AND SETS meeting in April.
It was also announced that the first meeting for the 2008 August Festival will be held at the Civic Center on Wednesday, April 30, at 6:30 p.m. Anyone with ideas or wishes to help, please attend.

Rec Center seniors
Ten ladies went to Smyrna for a day of sweet fun and delicious lunches. Washburn Rec Director Marcie Barbarula took the ladies to Easton, where they joined the Rec Center seniors from there to go together on a bus.
The group enjoyed touring the ‘sugary’ and got a free sample of ice cream and maple syrup. They toured the sugar camp building, but all the sap lines were under a generous layer of snow, so they missed watching the sap run. Inside, they also got to see a laptop presentation of honey making and visited the gift store.
They also enjoyed a great lunch at the Brookside Restaurant, where they ordered from a full menu and their waitresses served them a delicious pumpkin cake at no fee.
The Amish store tour was a real treat for everyone, and all bought some nice souvenirs. They shopped in a nice store with no electricity, the lighting was supplied by white gas and there was an old-fashioned hand-cranked cash register, which most of the seniors remembered seeing before! The two Amish men working there were nice and very helpful for the ladies, thanking them all for shopping there. The ladies brought home everything from beans to bake, caramel candy, hand-drawn greeting cards and molasses. All agreed they would like to make the trip again sometime.
Two of the Washburn seniors went the very next week, making the trip with SAGE (Seniors Achieving Greater Education), a group sponsored by UMPI. Gwen Bragg and Lorraine Harrison went and even got to see the syrup run into the vat in the cellar which was under snow when the other group took the tour. All the seniors appreciated the hard work the sugary crew did to make such a pleasant treat for others to enjoy.

The beans were made by Ronald Scott and parents donated goodies ranging from macaroni, potato and green salads, hotdogs and lots of yummy desserts. There were many auction items as well as the senior members of the Class of ’08 being willing to offer their services towards the auction. Auction items ranged from artwork, sodas, a crystal serving set and the crowd favorite – a hand-made quilt decorated with the handprints and names of every senior class member.
