The Presque Isle novice hockey team traveled to the Portland area on Feb. 28 to take part in the Casco Bay Hockey Tournament.
The team first faced the Lewiston Junior Maniacs on Saturday afternoon. In the first period, Denny Young had a quick breakaway from his defensive position to put the puck in the Maniac’s goal. The Maniacs soon evened the playing field when they scored their first goal.

Both teams played perfect defense in the second period with the score remaining at 1-1. Goalie Heinz Schumacher faced nine shots on goal, and was assisted by his defensive team members Alex Brewer, Greg Jellison, Torey Levesque and Denny Young. In the third period, Thomas Patenaude earned the Wildcats their second goal of the game to secure a win over the Maniacs. The offensive team of Sarah Beaulieu, Drenn Belmain, Eric Benson, Devin Ireland and Isaac Madore all contributed to the victory.
The Wildcats then matched with the Casco Bay Avalanche. The Avalanche quickly scored their first two goals against PI in the first period. Then in the second period, Young had another breakaway to earn the team’s first goal. The Wildcat defense had a shutout the Avalanche offense in the second period. In the third period, Madore scored for the Wildcats. With only two minutes of play remaining, the Avalanche scored their third goal of the evening to earn the victory against the Wildcats. Schumacher faced 21 shots on goal for PI.
In their third game, the Wildcats faced the Wave of Warwick, R.I. early Sunday morning. Belmain scored his first goal of the season in the first period. Soon after the Wave offense scored two goals. The Waves shutout the Wildcats in the second period while scoring three more goals. Young showed his quickness again, scoring the team’s second goal in the third. The Wave took over the Wildcats with a total score of 7-2 to capture the win. Schumacher faced a total of 36 shots on goal.
The team is coached by Pierre Patenaude and assisted by Scott Madore, Tim Beldon and Kevin Schumacher.
