HOULTON — Looking for a quiet afternoon of browsing and bargain shopping? Then an afternoon at Memorial Park in Houlton may just be what you’re looking for.
On Saturday, July 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. more than 46 crafters and community members will set up shop throughout the park to offer passersby a deal on some unique and interesting items. The Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce has spent the past several months organizing the event and say the past week’s damp weather isn’t going to slow down their plans of putting on a successful craft fair.
“If it rains we have back-up arrangements with the rec department, but we’ve put our order in for good weather,” said Cyndi Scott, administrative assistant at the Chamber. “We do still have some booths available and we have another craft fair that is coming up on Aug. 23 and we still have booths available for that one also.”
“We do have some new ones that we haven’t had,” said Scott. “We’ve got a few that haven’t come back this year because of the expense of traveling, but we’re looking to be in real good shape.”
Among the different types of crafts being offered are ceramics, candles, homemade cookies, photography, jewelry as well as homemade salves and herbal skin care products.
“We’ve got quilted wall hangings — assorted crafts … I can’t even begin to name off the different crafts,” she said. “There are some very unique items that are available.”
The craft fair is also an opportunity for local organizations to do some local fund-raising. Some of the fund-raising groups include the Ladies Auxiliary from the American Legion, SOAR, the Houlton Humane Society and the First Baptist Church. Scott said all of the “goodies” being sold should be a hit.
“The First Baptist Church has homemade cookies,” said Scott. “They give out a cool whip dish and they have a selection of cookies and you get to fill a jar up with the cookies that they have on that table for one set price and they always have the best cookies. That’s a really, really big hit.”
SOAR will be selling ice cream with berry toppings and the Ladies Auxiliary will be selling popcorn and strawberry shortcake. Scott said there would be plenty of selections to please everyone’s taste buds.
