The weekly meeting of The Happy Losers was held July 9 at the Congregational Church in Island Falls. We had nine members weigh-in and nine attended our meeting.
Our person who lost the most weight for the week was Jackie Pratt and runner-up was Marion Burton. We had a great loss for the week. Everyone is doing very well since this is a summer, and all of the picnics and eating out doesn’t help with weight loss.
Reports were given by our secretary and treasurer for the week. We welcomed Lois McDonald to our group.
Our leader Jackie Pratt led the program for the week.
We hope all our members will be attending our annual outing for the year. We will be going to Lincoln to eat at Gilmore’s.
Please feel welcome to join or visit our great group. Weigh-ins are held from 7:30-8:45 a.m. every Wednesday at the Congregational Church and the meeting starts at 9 a.m. Call 365-4884 for more information.

Take Off Pounds Sensibly No. 233 of Houlton met at the Aldergate building on High Street for their July 11 meeting. The meeting for July 4 was cancelled because of the holiday.
Twenty ladies were in attendance counting 16 TOPS and 5 KOPS. It was the first time Janette Nelson had joined the KOPS circle. Congrats to Janette! Last week it was Barbara Grant, so congrats to Barbara too!
Joan Simpson was welcomed back. She had been absent for several months.
The Fall Rally is planned for Saturday, Oct. 4. Leader Joyce Estey urged all those who wanted to join the walking contest to keep track of those minutes.
Loser of the week was Betty Marley with runners-up Anita Nason and Vicki Little.
Some charms were distributed by Charm Person Melva Folsom to the members earning them. A complete list will be printed soon.
The skinny dish was held over; mystery gift was won by Charlotte Marley and the 50/50 drawing went to Kay Grass.
Joyce Estey, leader, brought the meeting to order. Her program was “Are you in control?” “If not, why not?” Joyce questioned. “If we lose weight, we feel better, we are more comfortable in a seat, especially an airplane seat, we feel better about ourselves, a time to buy new clothes and get rid of the old, and many more reasons.” The program was very good and many offered their reasons for losing weight.
We exercised for 10 minutes with Barbara Troy in charge. Many of the cricks and muscles we use very little became looser, thanks to Barbara.
Vicki Little gave us a tip of what she does, especially at night, when she is hungry — she eats a Fiber One energy bar. That little bit reduces her hunger. The box was passed around so we could get acquainted with it — we all sampled a piece of the bar and liked it.
Joyce distributed a recipe that Oprah Winfrey likes to call turkey burger; it sounded good, made with apples and celery and other different ingredients.
Denise Kinney, in charge of contests, will announce the winner of the Fourth of July contest at the July 18 meeting. She will start a new contest too.
The next meeting will be held Friday, July 18. If you need more information on the chapter, you may call Betty Ivey at 532-9653 or Charlotte Marley at 757-8483.
Weigh-in time is 8-8:45 a.m. every Friday. We begin the meeting at 9 a.m. and usually end an hour later.
See you at TOPS — everybody is welcome.

The Purple Hat Society gathered at the home of Larry and Peggy Sanders in Smyrna Mills for its July meeting. It was in the form of a brunch and began at 10 a.m.
It was held on Larry/Peggy’s patio and the perfect spot for an outdoor meeting.
Charlotte Marley, leader, again took charge. Charlotte was assisted by Arlene Friel, Helen Blois, Sandy Wyman and Delores Locke with tags and signing up. Each one of the ladies gave her Purple Hat name and introduced herself to those who were present for the first time, namely Doris Sherman and Doreen Messina.
Lois Downing gave the blessing before the meal. Then the ladies lined up to get the ingredients for their “omelet in a bag.” We had eggs, ham, onions, cheese, red and green peppers, and a few more ingredients to make a tasty omelet. A couple of the omelets landed on the floor but were quickly wiped away before Peggy’s dog got the ham/cheese!
The omelets were delicious, with coffee, tea and orange juice and fresh blueberry and cranberry muffins! We’ll do it again, we hope!
Charlotte read a story about our country and how we take things for granted. Lois Downing read a comical love story of Ralph and Edna. Bunny Stewart also had a reading.
Then we had a yarn toss and “toss” it was! Everyone took part and Charlotte had us tell something about ourselves when one acquired a part of the ball of yarn, so we were zigzagged! Most of the features were family, ages and friends!
After the meal, Doris Sherman, nurse at Houlton Regional Hospital, did her rendition of a country girl. She wore a big hat, jeans, red blouse and “funny teeth” with all the markings of a teenager of Dolly Parton’s age at 15. Her stories reflected the outfit. Doris also sang a few songs for us, one called, “Thank God for My Christian Home.” It was a delightful program. Thanks to Doris.
Attending were: from Cary, Joanne Scott; from Houlton, Lois Downing and from New Limerick, Doreen Messina, visitor.
From Dyer Brook, Marie Gillotti, Wannetta Townsend, and Sandy Wyman.
Also, from Oakfield, Helen Blois, Delores Locke, Evelyn Johnston, Bernice Campbell, Mildred Gagnon, Jackie Kennedy, Sandra Holmes, Evelyn Burpee, Velma Cale, Alma Clark, and Doris Sherman, visitor.
From Merrill, Arlene Friel, from Smyrna, Peggy Sanders, Bunny Stewart, and Charlotte Marley.
We had picture taking at the end of the time for leaving and before that we sang the Purple Hat song to the tune of Ta, Ra, Ra, BOOM Tee Ay!
The next meeting will be Aug. 12 at Grammy’s Inn at Linneus. Plan to join us but if you want more information, you may call Charlotte at 757-8483 or any of the other ladies.
See you in August.

Good morning, good evening or good day everyone!
Our big Fourth of July holiday is over until 2009! What a nice holiday it was with the fair, the band, games, friends and outings, just to name a few.
Doris Hogan had family from South Carolina, or was it North Carolina. She enjoyed them immensely.
Joe Hogan was in town during the holiday. Joe lives in Standish and is a nice young man. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Hogan, Main Street, years ago.
Mike and Shannon McDonald with sons Elijah, Isaiah and Tobias of Rochester, NH and Damien and Faith Watson with daughter Adison of New Hampshire were visitors of their grandmother, Marion Hogan, on the Fourth of July.
Elwood Scott returned home one day last week after several days’ stay at Houlton Regional Hospital. Elwood had pneumonia. Glad you’re better, Elwood.
Bonnie, daughter of Althea Lloyd, of Connecticut visited her mother for several days recently. She returned before the Fourth of July.
Jeremy Rockwell of Houston, Texas was a caller on his grandmother, Lois Downing, on Monday of last week.
Dana and Debbie Adams of Florida was in town for the Fourth of July.
Many of our tenants attended the funeral services of Darrell Crane, a well known farmer and friend in this area.
My thought for the day is: “…the man who makes me his refuge will inherit the land and possess my holy mountain.” (Isaiah 57:13).
Have a good week.
