Medicinal plants seminar
The Acadian Archives and Wesget-Sipu recently invited Natalia Bragg of Knot II Bragg Farm, in Wade, to give a workshop about the uses of native plants for medical purposes. The public was invited to the free four-hour event which took place on the campus of UMFK, and a good crowd of approximately 34 joined the workshop. The first hour was taken up with an Herb Walk including the Evangeline Gardens area where Bragg identified the various plants, herbs and roots that grow naturally in our environment, and explaining what they can be used for.
After the walk, the group returned to the lab on campus and, based on the knowledge acquired, they designed their own salve formulas. Some were intended for bones and ligaments and the accompanying pains. Natalia has heard back from some members of the group who noted their salves were “very” affective. Each participant went home with their salve and an original herbal salve formula, and all prepared to start their own herbal apothecary.
Bragg is a founding member of the Aroostook County Herb Association and has been a practicing herbalist for 39 years. This workshop was paid for and made possible by grant money to the college through local Native American tribes. There will be more workshops held in the near future at the campus of UMFK. For further information call Lise Pelletier at 834-7536.
Natalia also offers seminars at the Knot II Bragg Farm on the New Dunn Town Road, held on a regular basis throughout the summer months. All classes start at 10 a.m. and run for about four hours for a small fee. The next class will be about simple country remedies and is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 8, followed by How to Use Native Aroostook County trees to stay well, and on Friday, Oct. 10, participants will hear about making special herbal gifts, teas and vinegars made from easily accessible plants.
