ELLSWORTH – Stacey McNamee of Fort Fairfield, daughter of Mitchell McNamee and Diane Hussey of Biddeford, received a $5,000 scholarship from the Fort Fairfield High School Class of ’54 at graduation ceremonies in June.
McNamee plans to pursue a nursing degree at the University of New England.
She was president of the National Honor Society and SADD, class vice president, a three-sport athlete and a member of the band and chorus.
Norman Stevenson, chair of the Class of ‘54 Scholarship Fund, presented the scholarship.
“This is the fifth award we have granted and we are continually impressed with the quality of the students selected by the Fort Fairfield High School Scholarship Committee,” he said. “Their high scholastic standing, leadership positions and work ethic speak volumes, as does their desire to have an impact.”
The Class of ’54 scholarship increased this year, from $4,000 to $5,000. The Class of ’54 Scholarship Committee is now challenging classmates to increase the scholarship to $6,000 to commemorate its 55th class reunion next year.
“The cost of education is increasing,” Stevenson said, “and student debt is getting out of hand. We want to help as much as we can.”
The fund is supported by 67 percent of the class.
Stevenson praised the Maine Community Foundation (MaineCF), which manages the scholarship fund.
“Investment results have been strong,” he said, “but we still need our classmates to step up to the plate to make the $6,000 goal.”
The Class of ’54 Scholarship Committee hosted a reception June 6 for past recipients of the scholarships. They include Jonathan Everett, a business major at St. Joseph College, who graduated this year; Lacey Chambers, a nursing student at Husson College; Kelsey Towle, an art major at the University of Maine at Portland; and Heather Hathaway, who is attending the Massachusetts School of Pharmacy.
