Houlton – Clyde Thomas Hiltz, 82, died August 10, 2008, at the Caribou Veterans Home. He was born May 27, 1926, at Beans Corner (Jay), the son of George E. and Maude (Clark) Hiltz.
Clyde enlisted in the US Army in 1944 and served in the infantry until transferring to the Army Air Force, pursuing a career in law enforcement. He retired in the grade of Master Sergeant as an Air Force Police Supervisor and Criminal Investigator. After his military career he worked for the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad and at Ricker College before organizing the Houlton Ambulance Service. He was Director of that service for 16 years. During this time he worked part-time in law enforcement with the Houlton Police Department and the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department until 1978, when he was appointed Bail Commissioner for the Maine District and Superior Court system. In 1991 the American Police Hall of Fame presented Clyde with the J. Edgar Hoover Medal for Distinguished Public Service.
Clyde is survived by his daughter, Beth (Hiltz) Boulier and her husband Randy, and granddaughter, Amanda Boulier all of Houlton, he also leaves many relatives throughout Maine and New Hampshire. Clyde was predeceased by his wife of 37 years, Virginia Jenny (Cumming) Hiltz and 11 brothers and sisters.
