Island Falls news
By Riva Hawkes
Tom and Linda Hawkes and son Chris, with wife Amanda and son Joshua, have returned home to Glenburn after spending several at Birch Point campground. They enjoyed going to the area yard sales, eating fresh corn from Binotto’s and entertaining Riva at a birthday supper in her honor.
Tom also visited with Frankie Edwards, who attended Island Falls High school at the same time as Tom, at his camp on the pond.
After spending several weeks at their cottage on lower Mattawamkeag Lake, Alan and Paula Chamberlain have returned home to West Point. They plan to return later to spend a week at the camp and then close it for the winter.
Nickie Varney and grandson, Cody arrived last week to stay at the Varney camp on upper Mattawamkeag Lake and enjoy the fishing and swimming. Clayton and Priscilla joined them for a few days before they returned home to Winterport. By the way, the fishing was good and I got to enjoy a few of them.
Mrs. Phyllis Jenkins and daughter of Concord, N.H. arrived for a very short visit with sister and aunt, Riva Hawkes, to help her celebrate a birthday, and they spent the a day and a half that they were here talking over old times, and of course, eating. They and more of the family plan to return next month for a longer visit.
I have recently received word that Phyllis (Curry) Taylor, daughter of the late Lewis and Vivian Curry, passed away in Rockville, Conn. As a former resident of Island Falls, she always enjoyed coming home to spend a vacation at the Curry homestead and visiting with her many relatives here. She leaves three children, Jay, Dee Ann, and Mark and their families, all in Connecticut, and her brothers and sisters, who reside in the Portland area and in Aroostook County.
While mowing between the showers that we have had I am still finding those dratted holes that the skunks have so carefully dug. It will take me the rest of the summer to go out and try and fill them up. And, since I have started to put a few sunflower seeds in my birdfeeders, the pigeons have somehow discovered this (they must have good radar) and so now they are appearing at least once in the morning to see if they can get any of the seeds. Hopefully, the black cat will discourage them, as I think he got one of them last week. Feathers were everywhere as proof.
And every once in awhile the doe and her fawn appear and the spots on the fawn are slowly fading, as he is quite big now. It’s still fun to watch them play out back, with the young one having a ball leaping and dashing all over the place, and Ma placidly munching away on whatever shrub deer eat. Soon it will be time to put out some apples for them.
