Final call put out for petitions to repeal school consolidation

STONINGTON — The leaders of the citizen-initiated petition to repeal the school consolidation law announced on Monday that they have more than sufficient signatures to meet the minimum requirement of 55,087 signatures to file the petition.    Skip Greenlaw, Chair of the Maine Coalition to Save Schools, indicated that members of the coalition plan to present the petitions to the Secretary of State’s office on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. at the Burton Cross State Office Building in Augusta. Members of the public are invited to attend the presentation.
As soon as the Secretary of State’s office certifies that there are the minimum number of required signatures, the petition will be forwarded to the members of the 124th Maine Legislature for its consideration. The petition requests that the school consolidation law , enacted in June 2007, be repealed. If the Legislature does not enact the petition, Maine voters will have an opportunity to vote for repeal in November 2009.
Members of the coalition are collecting all outstanding petitions. If there are any Maine residents who still have petitions with signatures in their possession, Greenlaw asked that the circulator have his or her name notarized and have the town clerk certify the signatures as voters of that community.
Greenlaw asks that persons forward the petitions to him at PO Box 52, Stonington, ME 04681 or call Greenlaw at 367-2738 or e-mail at skipg@midmaine.com. Petitions must be received no later than Oct. 7.
