100 Years Ago-Jan. 13, 1909
 Aroostook Times

    Houlton — George Q. Nickerson has recently purchased a six cylinder Overland runabout with a detachable rumble seat.
    HHS seniors — The senior class of Houlton High School will give the comedy drama “Starry Flag,” sometime next month. The class has exceptionally good talent this year and should make a great success.
    Missing — H.W. Moore, one of the members of the Colby Glee Club, lost his dress-suit case while coming down from Presque Isle. Mr. Moore was unable to find any clue to the person who took the grip.
    Weather conditions — The public schools were closed Wednesday on account of the rain and the slippery sidewalks.
    Ice cutter — W.L.Magee will cut ice this year as usual, and it will be of the finest quality, while the price will not be unreasonable.

    Cadet System — An innovation known as the Cadet System, which has been worked out in a number of localities with gratifying success is being tried out under the supervision of Supt. George J. Cumming. A number of young women, recent graduates of college without jobs have been given jobs, without pay in the local schools. They will assist the more backward scholar. These ladies will be eligible for jobs as vacancies arise. The young women are the Misses Cordelia Putnam, Effie Stantial, Muriel Hallett, Barbara Wilson, Averill Gellerson, and Edith Hoskins.
    Littleton — Miss Gertrude Maxwell, Preston Woodworth and one of the Deacons, George Sweet from the Littleton Baptist Church were dinner guests on Thursday of Rev. and Mrs. E. C. Jenkins, it being their 31st wedding anniversary.

50 Years Ago-Jan. 8, 1959

    Esters — Bernard E. Esters, publisher and editor of the Pioneer Times was sworn in this morning as a member of the Governor’s Executive Council.
    New Year’s Baby — Mr. and Mrs. Elbridge Emerson are the parents of the first baby born in this area for 1959.
    A daughter, Laurie Susan was born at 6:02 p.m. Her parents received many gifts from local merchants and a start of a savings account from the Houlton Publishing Company.
    Patten — Service boys home were Richard Palmer, William Bossie, William Hurlbert, Wayne Birmingham and Leonard Shorey.
    Shires — Bob Davenport was top scorer of the Houlton-Presque Isle game dunking 16 field goals and three free throws for a total of 35 points. The Shires won 87-74.
    Snowballs — Thousands of cylinder formed snowballs, shaped and made by nature were discovered in several fields in Weston and also on Deering, Brackett and Grand Lakes. The snowy tumbleweeds covered acres of snow-covered ground.

TO DISNEYLAND — The McKay family of Burleigh Street boards United Air Lines Flight 709 at Logan Airport on their way to Disneyland in California, to participate in a conference on family security to be sponsored by Insurance Company of North America.     Rotary — Rotary gave $4,550 to schools from its annual auction funds to improve the facilities in their auditoriums. Bob Bahr, of Houlton’s musical staff said the money would complete the new lighting equipment needed. Tim Humphrey, from the Hodgdon School music department said that the money would help fund a new sound system for the school.
    Housing units — Carvell Hatfield announced plans for the construction of a 20-unit family housing project on Bowdoin Street.
    Fitzpatrick — Joyce Fitzpatrick of the F.A. Peabody Insurance Co. earned the designation of certified insurance counselor. She has been with the insurance company since 1976.
    Champs — Matt Felker is the Champion of the singles Ping Pong Tournament at the Rec Center. Jon Pike was runner-up. The Pool Champion was Jon Pike and Danny Toby was runner-up. Chad Belyea was the Bumper Pool champion and Ryan Hines was runner-up.
    Honored — Navy Yeoman First Class Joseph F. Hughes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hughes received personal congratulations of the Readiness Commander for New England for his tireless and outstanding effort he has given the staff. He is stationed in Newport, R.I., where he serves as an administrative specialist in manpower affairs.
