Last Tuesday at Hodgdon, the game was like a heavy weight championship bout between Houlton and Hodgdon, but it was the Shires delivering the knock out blow, 56-34.
The Hawks worked their defense to shut down Houlton’s leader James Bates to keep themselves in position. With the score tied at 6-all, the first punch landed was to Hodgdon when Andrew McGillicuddy, who with his twin brother Daniel make a sizeable front line, was tagged with his second personal foul and exiting to the bench.
But, Hodgdon would jab Houlton when Bates was hit with his second personal foul with the Shires ahead 13-8 at the 2:07 mark of the first quarter. The Shires held a 15-10 opening lead, but felt the affects of yet another blow when Jordan Codrey, Houlton’s inside man and rebounder, was hit with his second personal foul with the Shires leading 20-16 with 4:59 left to intermission.  Then, Codrey was tagged  with his third personal with 33 seconds left in the second.
