2009 is the 150th anniversary of the incorporation of Caribou, and a yearlong schedule of events will make it a fun and memorable celebration of our heritage and history. A user-friendly Web site contains everything you might like to know about our Sesquicentennial can be found at www.celebratecaribou.com. Or stop by the Caribou Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Also, we welcome you to our next Sesquicentennial Committee meeting, taking place today, Feb. 18, at the Caribou Public Library’s Caribou room. It starts at 4 p.m. and we welcome all to come and get involved.
There are two other upcoming ways to get involved and support this year’s efforts. On Friday, Feb. 27, there will be an Irish Celebration at the Caribou Performing Arts Center, in conjunction with the Caribou Council for the Arts and the Presque Isle Sesquicentennial Committee. There will be an authentic, traditional Irish dinner beginning at 5 p.m., with fantastic Celtic performances following at 7 p.m. Dinner tickets are $7; tickets are limited and should be purchased in advance at the Caribou Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Caribou One Stop, or the Aroostook Centre Mall; show tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door.
On Saturday, Feb. 28, Caribou’s long history of winter carnivals and sports will add a new chapter with the Downtown Dash for the Cash in Lyndon Square. This day-long event will take place in the Downtown Mall/Lyndon Square area, and will feature ski dash races for all age groups, as well as numerous food booths and commemorative items for sale. A bonfire will wrap up the day’s events. Races begin at 10 a.m. This event is sponsored by Northern Skiers ski club and the Maine Winter Sports Center.
