Kiwanis news
The Easton Kiwanians held their Feb. 24 meeting at the Odd Fellow’s Hall with five Kiwanians from Presque Isle and six from the home club in attendance. John Graves, of the Presque Isle Kiwanis, talked about an Inter Club meeting that will be held on March 10 at the Francis Malcolm Science Center. This includes Presque Isle, Caribou and Easton and others who might like to attend. There will be pizza, a planetarium show and fellowship. Lois Ladner was the speaker for the evening and she spoke on what we’re going to do with our $8 stimulus check, how are we going to spend it and other pertinent items of interest. Everyone enjoyed her presentation. President Mike Allen reported that the annual Winter Carnival would be held on Kinney Hill on March 3 and that the Easton Kiwanis Club will be doing the hotdogs and drinks.
Next meeting will be on Tuesday evening, March 10.
United Methodist Women
The Easton United Methodist Women held their February meeting on Feb. 18 at the home of Freda Dionne with five members able to be there. Devotions were led by Glenice Craig with prayer for those on the “Prayer List” and the “Lord’s Prayer.”
The word for the day was “heart.” After the reading of the UMW Promise, the secretary’s report was read by the president, Eldora Carter, in the absence of Secretary Marjorie Corey. This was accepted as read. Treasurer Marie Hewitt reported that she had received money for one baby quilt. The quilt chairman, Freda, told the group that she had sold one baby quilt, that there were six more for sale and one large one.
Under Community Service, they all reported that they recycled some donated clothes to the Free Will missions and two of the members sang with the choir at the Mars Hill health care facility this month. The group made 28 visitations and four cards were sent.
Under New Business, it was voted to donate a sum of money for the church’s booklets, “Our Daily Bread.” It was also voted to donate the usual sum of money to the high school seniors’ Project Graduation. Following the meeting, the hostess served angel food cake with whipped cream and strawberries, and a good time was had afterwards in discussions on a variety of subjects.
The next meeting will be on March 18, with Marjorie Corey. Freda Dionne will have devotions and the word of month is “life.”
Visits
John and Nina Trask have flown to Florida to spend some time with their daughter, Norma Jean, and family. Anbd Duncan and Dottie Beaton have taken off on a cruise to the Bahamas. The Beatons have traveled to many places but they missed the Bahamas until now. They will be joined by two of Dottie’s cousins whom she hasn’t seen in many years.
Sympathy
Our sympathy goes out to Helen Brooks Palmer, and her daughter and family, on the death of her husband, Antone “Tony” Palmer, of Presque Isle, on Feb. 12. Tony was 78 and had not been well for some time. Helen and her daughter, Connie, formerly lived here in Easton on the Station Road. He was a member of the hockey and softball teams and the Army Cadet Corp. while he was a student in the Bath, New Brunswick High School. He graduated from the Ohio School of Trades in Columbus where he became a fire truck maintenance specialist. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force and, while stationed in Florida, he worked on stock cars in his off-duty time. Tony worked many jobs and then his interest turned to race horses. He and Helen were very much into racing and Tony held a lot of positions in that sport. In 1976 he rode his horse in the Bicentennial Wagon Train to Valley Forge. He served as “Santa Paws” for the Central Aroostook Animal Shelter and was a member of the Ray Goding Post 88 American Legion. This does not begin to cover the active life of Tony Palmer that I’m sure many people did know about. Besides his wife of 46 years and Connie, he leaves grandchildren and many relatives and friends who will surely miss him very much. Funeral services were held in St. Anne’s Episcopal Mission in Mars Hill on Saturday, Feb. 21, and a military service will be held in the spring at the Glenwood Park Cemetery, on the Easton Road, Presque Isle. In lieu of flowers, one can donate to the Central Aroostook Humane Society in his memory.
Our sympathy also goes out to the family of Sandra Ann Dumond, 57, who passed away on Friday, Feb. 13, including: sons, James Dumond, of Easton, and Scot Dumond and wife Angela, of Mars Hill, and her daughter, Kerri Foster and husband, Derek, of East Vassalboro. She also leaves two sisters who will greatly miss her, Carolyn Holmes of Westfield and Betty Brewer of E Plantation, three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Her husband, Jake, predeceased her as well as her father and a brother Charles Ryder. Memorial services were conducted on Tuesday at the Old Fashion Revival Center in Blaine, with Pastor Mark Carter officiating. A spring burial will be in the Tapley Cemetery in Blaine.
