The Easton Kiwanis Club held their April 7 meeting at an Easton Wesleyan Church Sunday School room because the Odd Fellows Hall was still under renovation. Board Chairman Barbara Blackstone reported that there was little for the Board to work on except that a new slate of officers should be brought to the next meeting to be voted on. Barbara and Vaughn Martin are on the Nominating Committee.
President Michael Allen reported that he, Bernie Hussey, Ann Osgood, Tom Osgood and Mike Cyr attended the Caribou Kiwanis meeting at The Jade Palace in Caribou last month. The group voted to donate $50 to the Easton Project Graduation.
Committee reports were called for. Membership Chairman Clair Carter reported no new members and that one person had come once but never returned.
Vaughn Martin reported on the Easton Food Cupboard as he had just come from working on it. He said that they had been swamped by frozen food items and didn’t know just where they could put all that they had been given. Pastor Maxwell was going to ask the school department and several other places for freezer room if they could spare it. The USDA and Good Shepherd Food Bank have accepted our Food Pantry and the over-supply of frozen items have come from the USDA. These organizations deliver to the Catholic Charities in Caribou where Easton picks up the items. Our pantry pays the Catholic Charities $500 a year to do this. He said they are never quite sure how much they will get and just what it might be. They try to use up the USDA food first because this organization wants to know how much is left on the shelves. Vaughn reported that they are helping 36 families right now.
President Mike stated that they need a report from Easton’s Key Club on what they are doing in the community. The Key Club is now collecting tabs from tops of cans.
Mike also warned the group that the last Friday in July would be the Northern Maine Fair and that they were going to try to run two booths and would need help from all the members. They are already making plans. He stated that he had heard that there would be only daytime racing and some felt that that would cut into their sales.
He also reported that last years scholarships of $500 and $250 had been paid.
A pizza supper with green salad and lemon dessert was enjoyed by those attending, including: Mike and Loris Allen, Keith and Esther Richardson, Eldora and Clair Carter, Harold Clark, Bernard Hussey, Barbara Blackstone and Vaughn Martin
The Easton Happy Days Senior Citizens’ Club met on Thursday, April 9, for their regular meeting and potluck dinner. Some of the ladies wore Easter bonnets they had fashioned themselves. After the meal the meeting was called to order by President Marie Hewitt with the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of “America,” without piano.
Ida Doak called the Roll with these members present: Marie Hewitt, Edith Fuller, Eldora Carter, Lindy Fowler, Arlene Ladner, Allene Embleton, Rogina Thomas, Nina Trask, Ezalee Smith, Joann Johnson, Rena Richardson and Ida.
Treasurer, Ida Doak, gave her report which was accepted as read. Secretary Eldora Carter read the minutes of the last meeting, which were also accepted as read.
The president read a card from the Aroostook Area Agency on Aging, about their upcoming meeting on Monday, April 20, at the K of C Hall in Fort Fairfield. The meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. and end at 10:30 a.m., with a full meal to follow. They expressed the need for a head count of who might be attending, to be sent to Leonard Jaundreau or call 472-6102.
The president also read a Newsletter from RSVP with items of interest. She read of the central region banquet for the area that will be held this year at the Caribou VFW on May 13. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and the Good Ol’ Boys band will supply music. She urged the volunteers to get their time sheets in. RSVP members have to have at least 30 hours to be able to attend the banquet.
It was voted to make a donation to the Ronald McDonald House in memory of Hilda Langley. Hilda had just started to attend the Club.
A birthday card was also signed to be sent to Joan Gray at the Mars Hill Nursing Home.
A contest of the Easter bonnets was held and pictures taken of those who participated. The winner was Rogena Thomas with her quickly-constructed bonnet just before coming to the meeting.
Rollie and Freda Dionne, along with Clair and Eldora Carter, attended the Recognition Luncheon given by the Mars Hill Rotary Club for the volunteers of the Mars Hill Food Cupboard and the Mars Hill Region of Meals on Wheels. Rollie and Clair have been serving at the Food Cupboard for several years.
The town was surprised and saddened by the death of longtime citizen, 89-year-old Hilda Langley. Our sympathy goes out to her family. Hilda fell at her apartment at West Ridge Manor and was taken to The Aroostook Medical Center on Tuesday morning, March 31, and then transferred to the Presque Isle Health Care Facility where she passed away on Friday morning, April 3. Hilda had only months ago moved into her apartment in the manor and sold her home across the road to Julie Allen. Settling in had been hard for Hilda, as it would be for most of us older people. She was born in Pittsfield and graduated from Maine Central Institute, Pittsfield. She married Aubrey Langley on Oct. 19, 1940. Hilda was a member of the Easton United Methodist Church and the Easton United Methodist Women. She had been employed as a secretary and bookkeeper with the Maine Farmers Exchange and the Maine Bureau of Unemployment, both in Presque Isle. Her husband, Aubrey, passed away in 1975 and she was predeceased by a sister, Afton Burrill. Hilda is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Marcia Langley, of Fort Fairfield, and a daughter, Frances Kelley, and her partner, Lee Martz, of Winterport. She also leaves behind six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Hilda wished only to have a committal service. That will be held at the Estes Park Cemetery in Easton later this spring. Instead of flowers, those who wish may contribute in her memory to the Ronald McDonald House, Our House of Maine, Inc., 654 State St., Bangor, ME 04402.
We want to wish Elizabeth Martin and Nola Pendexter very happy birthdays today. And happy anniversary to Traci and Chuck Halverson and also to Pete and Ann White who celebrate tomorrow. Tomorrow is also Ann’s birthday, so don’t forget, Pete.
