Houlton and Connecticut – Mabel Marie (St. Peter) Britton, 94 , a resident at the Evergreen Healthcare Center in Stafford Springs, CT, ascended to her Heavenly home on April 17, 2009, four days shy of her 95th birthday. She was born April 21,1914, at Stockholm, the second oldest of 12 children of Willie and Marie (Dionne) St .Peter.
Mabel’s legacy is one of hard work, an incredible love for family, and an unbridled optimism. After growing up on her parents’ farm and attending 2 Image years of high school in Stockholm, she became  employed as a domestic worker, with a salary of $3.00 per week, and also attended night school there. After a few years, she moved to Houlton and worked as a waitress and as a clerk at J.C.Penney until 1941. She then went to work as a bookkeeper and payroll clerk at the Houlton Air Force Base during World War II. When the war ended in 1945, Mabel married Allison Britton, who had a thriving Aroostook County sign painting business. She became a full-time secretary and bookkeeper for Allison for many years while raising their two daughters. At the age of 91, Mabel moved from her home of 60 years on Spring Street in Houlton to the home of her eldest daughter, Sandra Jenks in Enfield, Conn.
Mabel was a member of the Military Street Baptist Church in Houlton for over 50 years. She was an avid sewer, crocheter, and knitter, making dozens of intricate doilies, mittens, and afghans for her children and had even made baby afghans for her future grandchildren. Mabel enjoyed spending time at "San-Bar" camp, which Allison built, on Drews Lake. She also loved her flower gardens, watching the goings-on from her porch easy chair, talking to neighbors, Sunday rides, and taking care of her home. Mabel’s family and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her greatest enjoyments in life.
Mabel is survived by two daughters, Sandra Jenks and son-in-law, Eric of Enfield, CT, Barbara Douglas and son-in-law, Rob of Gorham; six grand-children, Matt Jenks of Charlottesville, VA, Rebecca Millard and her husband Christian of Charlottesville, VA, Jamie Douglas of Freeport, Ryan Douglas of Manizales, Colombia, Joshua Douglas of Portland, Amber Douglas of Lexington, MA; two great-grandsons, Sage Douglas Leahy of Coos Bay, OR and Christian Millard of Charlottesville, VA; and great-granddaughter, Courtney Millard of Charlottesville, VA; four brothers; Lorendo St. Peter of Lancaster, CA, Alcid St .Peter and his wife, Polly, of Gorham, Eldaige St. Peter and his wife Carol of Sherburne, NY, Everett St. Peter and his wife Florence of Lisbon Falls; several nieces and nephews.
