To the editor:
Each week I read the Court News section of the paper and I laugh, what a joke. What is wrong with our legal system? Or better yet, what is wrong with the District Attorney and Judges? In the May 20, 2009 edition of the paper there were four charges for unlawful possession of scheduled drugs or trafficking, one for cultivating marijuana, one for stealing drugs and two different charges of sexual abuse or unlawful sexual contact, two counts of which were with minors and the most time that any of these people received were six months in jail or prison. But yet you have probation violations which can be for a number of things and these people are getting 12 to 18 months. Some of which are for failing a drug test or not abiding by all of the rules laid out for them.
I am not saying that they are any less wrong in their doing, I am simply stating that we complain our community needs to do something to make it better but how can we when you have our lenient legal system, the one that is supposed to be keeping criminals off the street, drugs out of our children’s hands and keeping pedophiles away from everyone, especially our children. Letting these people off with a slap on the hand is not the answer.
Any criminal or potential criminal that reads our paper knows, go big when committing a crime especially with drugs because guess what? You’ll be home soon and able to do it all over again. I just thought I would share this information with the rest of the community as some people may have overlooked the laugh I receive each week.
