NEW LIMERICK — Seven more jobs vanished into the black hole of the recession last week with 36 more on the fringe of limbo in the latest round of layoffs at the LP plant in New Limerick.
According to Corporate Affairs Manager Mary Cohn it was “due to poor market conditions” even though the company’s laminated strand board product “has been well received and there are no issues with the mill.” Cohn said 36 of the layoffs are temporary while seven salaried employees are being laid off permanently with severance packages. She added that other layoffs and shift changes are being made in other LP locations.
Referring to the challenging economy, Cohn said she appreciated the effect the layoffs have on the employees and the community but the company’s goal is to conserve cash during this economic downturn until it subsides.
There are no projections as to when production will resume with a normal schedule in New Limerick. LP has invested $140 million at the New Limerick plant and Cohn says the intention is to bring the 36 hourly employees back at some point in the future.
