On July 18, a family reunion was held at the home of Roberta (Berry) Brooks with 61 members of the Berry family in attendance to honor the memory of Robert and Louise Berry, who had always looked forward to, and thoroughly enjoyed the family get-together every year.
There was food in abundance and many games were played, one of which was a favorite of Louise’s—’”Charlie Brown’s Christmas in July” where every child under 13 received a gift. This year, after the gift giving, those 13 and older put money on a money tree and the money was donated to the Island Falls library in memory of Louise.
Family members attending were, Roberta Brooks, Raymond Brooks, Jr., Robert and Brandi Brooks and family, Richard and Meagan Brooks and family, Rebecca (Brooks) and Sean Flanagan, George Berry and Eleanor, with children and grandchildren, Cora (Berry) and Floyd Batcheldor, with children and grandchildren, Carla (Berry) and Lewis Conrad with children and grandchildren, Steve and Donna Berry with children and grandchildren.
The family plans to repeat this special event next year and, hopefully, in years to come.
Alan Chamberlain has arrived from his home in Virginia to spend several weeks at his cottage on lower Mattawamkeag Lake and will be joined by his wife the first week of August.
Carol Varney has returned home to Winterport after spending several days at the Varney cottage on upper Mattawamkeag Lake with Clayton and Priscilla Varney.
Despite the bad weather this summer, many people are having a good time at their camps and going for a swim on the occasional good day and getting in a bit of fishing, I hope.
Another former resident of Island Falls has arrived to stay at her family cottage at Pleasant Pond. Gail (Webb) Davis, now living in South Carolina comes every summer for about three weeks and really enjoys all the Summerfest activities, always taking part in the running event and attending the Alumni Banquet.
The black cat has been quite faithful in coming for his breakfast early in the a.m. and then returning about 3 p.m. for a snack. I hope he is the one who is discouraging the pigeons from swooping in to get all the birdseed they can.
I have lots of red poles and gold finch still, with an occasional red-breasted grosbeak and of course, the blue jays. I have tomatoes on my plants, so I may have a good crop of them. I have been dusting my potatoes the past couple of days to get rid of the potato bugs I found on them. I still have no deer arriving in my back lawn——maybe when it gets colder they will arrive.
