Fall foliage bursts into view

FIERY FALL COLORS — Leaves around Houlton are quickly turning shades of golden yellow and fiery red, signaling that the fall season is upon us. These leaves compliment the town clock on the Aroostook County courthouse quite nicely.
    AUGUSTA — Foliage color in the northern half of Maine is now ranging from 30 to 75 percent toward peak, according to the second fall foliage report from the state Department of Conservation.
    Forest rangers in Aroostook County are observing high leaf color, or 50 to 75 percent toward peak, and low leaf drop.
    Aroostook State Park Manager Scott Thompson reports that the low-lying areas surrounding the park are 50 to 60 percent toward peak, and the ridges of hills and mountains are nearing peak. Thompson expects peak color to develop over the next two weekends if overnight temperatures continue to drop in the Presque Isle area.
    Color in (Zone 4) locations like Millinocket and Houlton is now moderate, or 30 to 50 percent toward peak according to the report. Leaf drop in both regions is still less than 10 percent.
