TOPS ME 0233 of HOULTON

Take Off Pounds Sensibly Chapter 0233 of Houlton met at the Aldergate building on High Street for its Friday, Oct. 2 meeting. Joyce Estey, leader, was present. Charlotte Marley was the official greeter.
Joanne Scott gave the weight recorder’s report. She reported that Janice Shaw was the loser of the week followed with Melva Folsom as runner-up.
Seventeen ladies attended with three KOPS. Lois Downing was the winner of the skinny dish.
Charlotte Marley wrapped up the “Loosing to Bloom” contest, which she headed. All the girls who entered the contest made blooms of their petals, red and green. Winners were Joanne Scott for TOPS and Lois Downing for KOPS. Pictures were taken by Charlotte and Elinor Harvey.
Joyce made plans for the rally in Augusta. Lois read a short notice of a chapter near Bangor having an open house. Lois’ program was on metabolism and myths of the subject. It was in the form of a true and false and Betty Ivey was the winner.
Barbara Troy talked on the new “Dr. Oz” program on television and told of a liquid one can drink to keep your appetite intact.
The next meeting will be Friday, Oct.9. Weigh-in time is 8-8:45 a.m. every Friday and the meeting starts at 9 and usually ends an hour later.

Happy Losers gather
The Happy Losers met at the Congregational Church vestry in Island Falls for their weekly meeting.
Jackie Pratt led the meeting with the pledge and roll call and followed by our ups and downs exercise.
Loretta Bouchard was the person who lost the most weight for the week and also she was the loser of the month.
We had 14 ladies weigh-in and 12 attended our class.
The secretary and treasurer gave their reports for the week. On our agenda for the month of October will be our fall outing at the Brookside on Oct.14 and on Dec. 16, we will be having our Christmas party. Keep those dates in mind.
The Harvest Moon team is winning in our contest that will end Nov.18. We had no program for the week, but we had just informal discussions. Also Annie Jane Smith and Jane Fitzgerald were runners-up for the week. Riva Hawkes read her usual joke at the end of the class.
Weigh-in time is 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. and meeting starts at 9 a.m.
Oakfield Seniors see fall colors
The Oakfield senior citizens took thier annual fall trip to see the see all the color and the beauty of the trees at the peak. A total of 18 members attended and a good time was had by all. Seeing the size of some of the desserts that were being handed out I could see why.
We had lunch at Ruthies restaurant in Millinocket and came back home through the nine-mile woods. Attending were Joe and Dureen Messina, Kathleen Boutlier, Elelyn and Merle Burpee,Bernice Campbell ,Martha Chapados, Arlene Friel, Mildred Gagnon, Marie Gilllotti, Jackie Kennedy, Nancy Lawrence, Bob and Delores Locke, Lois and Bud Macdonald, Peggy and Larry Sanders, and bus driver Judy Cameron.
Oakfield Seniors meet
Twenty-two members and two guests met at the Oakfield Snowmobile Club on Sept. 16 for lunch. The blessing was given and a great lunch was enjoyed by all. The flag salute and the Lord’s Prayer was led by president Bob Locke. The business meeting was short. The treasurer’s report was given and accepted as was the secretary’s report.
The card report was given by Wanetta Townsend. As usual Marie Gelotti did a great job decorating for our meeting. A big thank you has to be given to the ladies and gentlemen that help clean up after the meeting.
Our special guest was Doris Sherman, who sang some beatiful songs and as always it was enjoyed by everyone. Thank you Doris, please come again.

Fall weather is with us, definitely! We’ve had frost, rain, wind and old Sol. Thanks Lord for the latter.
Didn’t catch the Thibodeaus, Martin and Muriel, when they were in town from their home in Florida. Sorry I missed you folks. Dot Weston was one of the lucky ones to see the former liaisons.
Paul Downing of Wakefield, Mass. is visiting his mother, Lois Downing.
Leonard and Marcie Michaud of Highland Avenue have been in Iowa. They made a surprise visit to Marcie’s sister who was celebrating her 25th wedding anniversary. Leonard said it was a great visit. He used to be a volunteer on the Meals on Wheels.
And speaking of Meals on Wheels, saw Howard Stacey one day last week. He is out of the hospital now and living in an apartment near South Street. Howard says hello to all his friends here.
Shirley Nason and one of her recent helpers were out to lunch recently. It was a celebration and thank you for a helper who was leaving her employ. Glad you had a nice get-together.
Vicki Estabrook is a patient at Ross Manor in Bangor.
Charlene Henderson and husband Brian are on vacation.
When I talked to Ella Fitzpatrick,hairdresser, recently she was making plans for one of her daughters’ wedding, a Halloween wedding. It sounded like a super wedding.
Our Houlton Council of Catholic Women are operating their annual rummage sale at the parish center and St. Anthony’s Hall at St. Mary Church this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 8-10. Many here have asked when this is taking place, so now you can attend and take something home from this fabalous sale.
Thanks to all who have been leaving bags at my door, at my request. There is a need for them, so the request is still out there. Thanks a lot.
Bob and Judy Phelan of Overland Park, Kansas were Friday visitors of his aunt, Lois Downing.
Priscilla and Ron Brownlow had company last Monday. They were Frank Smith Jr., great-nephew, Carrie Gagne of Portage, Edwina Lovely of Mapleton and Eleanor Putnam of Presque Isle, nieces, also Edwina Lovely and Rhonda Bianco of Mapleton. They had a great visit.
Paul Armstrong informed me he and Carolyn Carmichael made Lady Ashburn’s pickles. I’ll bet they were scrumptious, as they are a favorite with many people.
Kathryn Hall was an overnight visitor of her mother, Lois Downing. They attended a surprise birthday party for Helen Folsom, given by her husband Bruce, in Linneus.
Here’s some trivia: Do you know what is inside corn that makes it pop? It’s water.
Donna Burns was in Presque Isle on Wednesday and had a great time with some members of her family.
We who recognize the angels all around us can also appreciate rainbows, sunrises, tides, spring and silver linings. How very lucky we are!
