Library bookmarks

The Washburn Memorial Library enjoyed a Christmas Celebration Story Time, with the usual format was changed slightly due to requests from the older students to be able to have a turn at story reading. Courtney Cannon read “The Best Christmas Present Ever” and Tanya Tarbox read “Santa Mouse, Where Are You?”
After the door prizes were handed out, Chelsea Sadler read “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” Refreshments were served and all enjoyed a long chat about favorite gifts received this year.
National Library Week was celebrated by a library Story Time, and books read were written by authors with Maine affiliations. Lucia Bragg read the story “Feast for Ten” and Catelyn Coulombe read “Little Loon and Papa.”
The children reminded the librarian that she forgot the scream that is usually done at the start of the program so it was performed before the door prize drawings. Librarian Katherine Corey read the story “Grandpappy Snippy Snappies.” Refreshments were served and everyone left very happy.
Door prize winners were: Victoria Savoy, Tal McCoy, Alyssa Dennett, Dawson McCoy, Lucia Bragg, Rebecca Savoy, Scott Flood, Reagan Whipkey, Catelyn Coulombe, Christa McCoy and Valerie Flood.
The library held an overnight student book discussion group on Jan. 15, which was also well-attended.
The library still has cookbooks to sell at a cost of $10 each, with the proceeds going towards a new public computer.
The 209 recipes included come from local cooks in Washburn, Wade and Perham and also include many old family “secret” recipes. You can buy them at the library, Town Office, Washburn Coffee Shop and Katahdin Trust.
The library’s knitting circle is still going on each Thursday morning. The 10 ladies meet from 10:30 a.m. until noon.
Corey has updated the library’s Web site, adding a calendar of 2010 events and photos, along with a posting of all of the articles published in the town’s newsletter; visit: http://sites.google.com/site/washburnmemoriallibrary. If you have any questions, feel free to call the 455-4814.

Boy Scout activities

Troop 177 gathered at the home of Jim and Debbie LeClair on the Gardner Creek Rd. on Saturday, Jan. 9, for a barn- and garage-cleaning day. It was an all-day event and the boys cleaned and sorted and organized a variety of items in both buildings, and even built some shelves for storage.
They also enjoyed some break time playing pool and darts and sharing the fun side of Boy Scouting with some local people.
They were provided a great BBQ lunch by Debbie LeClair including hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad, chips and coleslaw, and many tasty treats and snacks for break time.
The LeClairs noted that the boys did an excellent job of helping them out, and the family made a generous donation to help the Scouts on their up-and-coming Jamboree trip to Virginia this July. The boys found it rewarding to see their accomplishments as well as having earned expense money.
Those attending the all day-event included: Curtis Thompson, Kody Brissette, Brandon Cropley, Parker Thompson, Adam Wilcox, Daniel Roy, Tyler Jardine and adults Donald Wilcox, Randy Thompson, Mike Thompson and Larry Harrison.

Troop 177 winter weekend

Washburn Boy Scouts were a busy bunch the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 16 and 17, starting out with a town-wide bottle drive and afterwards moving to their campsite to practice winter camping skills.
On Saturday, the first task at hand was to build a snow dome and snow kitchen that they’ll be needing for the annual county-wide Winterama coming up in February. This accomplished, the Scouts cooked supper indoors, and a hearty beef stew and blueberry apple cobble was cooked outside in Dutch ovens. Needless to say, the boys slept well after such an active day.
Sunday morning’s breakfast was cooked outdoors over backpack stoves and consisted of hot Tang, oatmeal with squeeze butter added for energy and granola bars. The breakfast cooking crew included: Taylor Skinner, Parker Thompson, Brandon Cropley, Nicholas Gumprecht, Kody Brissette, Curtis Thompson and Tyler Jardine. Before continuing their day’s activities, the “Scout’s Own” religious service was conducted by Taylor Skinner.
After the grounds and camp were cleaned, it was time for snowshoeing. The trek went around the camp property and across the Salmon Brook. While on the trail, the Scouts checked on wildlife tracks and worked on tree identification. Many winter camping skills were learned and renewed during the weekend; and the adults completed some more work at the camp.
Those attending included construction crew Stacey Skinner and Greg Cropley and Scouts and leaders: Curtis Thompson, Taylor Skinner, Tyler Jardine, Parker Thompson, Brandon Cropley, Kody Brissette, Daniel Roy, Nicholas Gumprecht, Larry Harrison and Randy Thompson.
