Monticello Grange #338 has received its charter from Maine State Grange signifying that the grange has again been formed and will now hold regular meetings.
The Grange Hall is badly in need of some repairs. Basically the building is very sound and has been kept in fairly good condition since it was rebuilt in 1921, after it was destroyed by fire in 1918. The roof has got to be covered either with asphalt or metal. Covering the roof will be very expensive since it measures 94 feet by 28 feet, with both sides needing replacing.
To do this project, we are seeking funds. We will apply for one of the grants sponsored by the Bangor Savings Bank which is giving away $100,000 to worthy projects of non-profit organizations in the area. Several grants of $5,000 will be given to worthy applicants, and several grants of $1,000 will also be given. Bangor Savings Bank is to be commended for such a worthy project. Winners are determined by the number of votes cast by the general public. Voting can be done at Bangor Savings Bank or by voting online at www.Bangor.com. Voting ends March 2.
We will also ask the townspeople of Monticello to appropriate $4,500 toward the roof project. This amount was appropriated in 2006, but was put back into the general funds of the town when the roofing project was not done.
The Grange also needs bathroom facilities, since modern toilets have never been installed.
In addition to Grange meetings, the Monticello American Legion will also be using the Grange Hall for their home Post as will the Monticello Boy Scout troop.
This building has always been the center of activity for many years in the past, serving as a place for school plays, school graduations, town meetings, town office for many years, public suppers, wedding receptions, birthday parties, Boy Scout meetings and even for a basketball court.
It can again be a community center for many activities with some financial help.
The building has already been accepted in the Maine Society for the Preservation of Historical Buildings, and also the National Society for the Preservation of Historical Buildings.
Help us repair and preserve this beautiful place. Any donations can be mailed to Monticello Grange, c/o Jay Brewer, PO Box 33, Blaine, ME 04734.
