100 Years Ago-Feb. 10, 1910
Aroostook Times

    Littleton — Almon Hannon, while plowing on his farm turned out a live potato bug and the same day he found a live butterfly of great size and gorgeous colors. Rather unique for this time of year.
    Houlton — John H. Kidder of this town, the most genial man that ever put foot upon Aroostook soil and the best register of deeds that Maine ever boasted, was in Fort Fairfield Tuesday on his way home from Caribou. He called upon several of his old friends, none of whom were sorry to see him.


75 Years Ago-Feb. 7, 1935

Houlton Pioneer Times

    New bureau formed — A Retail Merchants Bureau composed of merchant, members of the Houlton Chamber of Commerce and to cooperate with that organization has been formed. Their duty will be to take active charge of special days, special programs and to sponsor events in town that will benefit retail stores.
    Scouts — Local Scouts will meet on Friday evening to observe the 25th Anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts of America. One of the principal features of the observance will be an address by the Honorary President of the Boy Scouts of America, Franklin D. Roosevelt over a nationwide radio hook-up.
    Monticello — The Monticello High School play “Look Out Lizzie” was successfully presented at the Grange Hall. Over two hundred people were present.

ANNIVERSARY — Judge and Mrs. Ira G. Hersey were honored on the occasion of their Golden Wedding anniversary when they were guests of honor at the regular monthly supper and meeting of the Fidelity Chapter O.E.S.

    Service Award — The U.S. Weather Bureau has presented a Bronze Length of Service Award to William H. Cumming, as a token of appreciation for having completed 25 years’ of service as a weather observer.
    Shopping Center — Houlton must compete with other communities to attract customers reported William Whited, executive secretary of the Houlton Planning Board. Discussion took place on Phase One of the proposed downtown project.
    Ricker convocation — Dr. C. Worth Howard, president of Ricker College announced that Dr. Lloyd H. Elliott, University of Maine president, would be the principal speaker at this year’s event.
    Mitchell retirement — The associates of the J.C. Penney Co. honored Mrs. Robert Mitchell who is retiring after 22 years’ of service. Mrs. Mitchell has been with the company since it opened in Houlton in 1938.

    Cable TV — Patients at Houlton Regional Hospital will be able to view cable TV in their rooms due to the efforts of Houlton Cable Television and the Houlton Regional Hospital Auxiliary.
    Scores 1,000 — Mary Harrigan, a 5 foot 10 inch senior who has been a starter all four years for the Houlton Lady Shires went over the 1,000-point mark during the game at East Millinocket. The Shires won the game 61-37.
    Dolls — East Grand Elementary School at Danforth held a Cabbage Patch Day with many students bringing in Cabbage Patch Kids, Pumpkin Heads and Flower Patches.
    Postal rates — The U.S. Postal Service has announced that a first class stamp will rise to 22 cents from the current 20 cents.
