HANOVER, NH – Gary Hubert Nevers, 73, died January 28, 2010. He was born August 4, 1936, in Island Falls, Maine. He was the son of the late Hubert and Claire (Haines) Nevers of Patten, Maine.
He graduated from Patten Academy and Burdett College in Boston, MA. In 1956 he married Carletta (Pettengill) Nevers who survives him.
His career began with Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. in Boston, MA. In 1964, he joined American Optical Co. in Sturbridge, MA, this was the beginning of his 40-year optical career. He enjoyed the last 15 years of his career as the optician at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. He retired in the fall of 2006.
He had a life-long love of basketball; he played all through high school and college. He became a referee at the high school level and also enjoyed his time as a scorekeeper and timer for Dartmouth men’s and woman’s basketball games. Golf was a passion along with swimming, traveling and spending time on his boat at Lake Sunapee, NH.
Gary was a member of Hanover Lions Club, a member of the New Hampshire Opticians Society, became a member of the Masons with his grandson, and he also volunteered for many local community projects. Gary was also an active member of the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College.
His main love however, was with his family. He is survived by his wife, Carletta of Hanover, NH along with two daughters, Jan Nevers of Encino, CA and Kim Craven and her husband Brice of Enfield, CT, and two grandchildren, Scott Craven of West Springfield, MA and Laura Craven of Enfield, CT.
A memorial service was held Sat. Feb. 6, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Gary H. Nevers memory to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center or Norris Cotton Cancer Center, 1 Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, NH 03756, or the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College, 40 North College Street, Hanover, NH 03755 or the charity of one’s choice.
