Give support to your local Humane Society any way you can

To the editor:
I recently moved to Island Falls from the Bangor area. In the many years that I lived in that area, I volunteered at the Bangor Humane Society as a foster parent. I recently contacted the Houlton Humane Society and offered to help, offering my help as a foster parent, etc. I read Heather Miller’s editorial in the Pioneer Times, in which she talks about people coming to the Humane Society to make sure their tax dollars are being spent properly.
I can say, based on my experience as a foster parent, that the shelter is caring for these animals very well. They don’t have a huge budget but what they do have is love and a huge desire to do what’s best for these animals. They are not wasteful with your tax dollars.
I think that anyone that cares about animals has something to offer this shelter. If you cannot afford to donate money maybe you can donate a little time. They are always in need of laundry detergent, paper towels, Clorox bleach, cat litter, etc. Next time you are shopping, pick up a little something and drop it off; they will so appreciate it. Today I dropped off a bottle of laundry detergent and they were pleased.
I am making little quilts for the cats out of blocks a kind bunch of quilters gave me and it is a project that doesn’t cost much at all. I have been rewarded in my own life by many shelter animals and hope that I can give just a fraction back of what these animals have given me.
Please support this great shelter in any way you can, whether with tax dollars or additional on your own. It will be very much appreciated.
