by Jennifer Buzza

Mapleton Cub Scout Pack 170 held its annual Pinewood Derby Feb. 6 at the Lions Hall in Mapleton. All Cub Scouts had a great time and learned valuable lessons. The top five racers were Isaac Adams, Liam Woodworth, Mike Perkins, RJ Gross and Ben Cummings.

An event such as this could not be coordinated without the help and support of several groups and individuals. A special thank you goes out to the Mapleton Lions Club, Dasco, Walmart, Tenney’s Country Store, Pizza Hut, Dead River Convenience Store, Big Cheese Pizza, Fox Family Chips, Star City IGA, Friends Market, Country Kitchen, Graves Shop ‘n Save, Pepsi Bottling Co. and the Ashland Cub Scouts, who enjoyed our day with us. For more information about the Cub Scout program, please contact Robby Gross at 764-5571.

One-year anniversary

This week’s column marks the one-year anniversary of my return to corresponding for Mapleton, Chapman and Castle Hill. I would like to express how much I have enjoyed returning as correspondent! I am so happy to be able to report the news for my hometown! It has been a delight (and a lot of fun) to have the opportunity to speak to many community members, meet new people, reconnect with old friends, collect news and interview several others. It has especially been a highlight of mine to write special feature stories for the paper. Thank you so much for embracing me as your connection to our local newspaper. Your support has been greatly appreciated!

Pizza Making 101

Mapleton Daisy and Brownie Girl Scout Troop 1133 participated in a pizza making class at the Presque Isle Pizza Hut, led by restaurant Manager Debbie Olah. The girls were given a tour of the kitchen and walk-in freezer and learned about proper hand washing appropriate for restaurants, which completed requirements for a patch and try-it. Each Scout was given the opportunity to make her own personal pan pizza, including sauce and the toppings of her choice! While the pizzas were baking, the girls learned a new song, “Wash, Wash, Wash Your Hands” to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.” They also participated in a friendship activity, helping the newest members of the troop learn each other’s names, while all had the chance to improve their listening and memory skills. Once the pizzas were ready, the girls (and mothers) enjoyed their specialty pizzas! The troop would like to extend a very special “thank you” to Debbie and her staff for opening the restaurant especially for the troop and making all feel so welcome!

Painted heads

Following their pizza making class at Pizza Hut, the Mapleton Daisy and Brownie Girl Scout Troop 1133 attended the fourth annual Planet Head Day at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Ten of the troop members donned bathing caps and had their heads painted like a planet, moon or comet. The girls had a great time watching community members (including local church clergy) have their heads shaved before sitting to be painted! The Scouts are familiar with the C.A.N.C.E.R. organization that benefited from the day’s events; their school is collecting donations for the organization’s clinic bags that are distributed to cancer patients in treatment and their Girl Scout Troop will be presenting a donation to the group later in the month. Troop members participating were Delaney Alward, Katelyn Amero, Bethany Baker, Madelyn Buzza, Alexis Getchell, Alexus LaFerriere, Jenna Mountain, Rebecca Rider, Sydney Robichaud, Brooke Trask, Paige Trask and Amanda Winslow.
