HOULTON, Maine — Supporters of Walk Like MADD and the Hutchinson family will be out Saturday, March 27 at the Houlton High School parking lot at 10 a.m. to remember Darcie Hutchinson. The walk is an outreach of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
Darcie’s sister, Nicole, said she will be walking in North Carolina for the “Darcie Connection” because her sister was killed by a drunk driver — a three-time repeat offender, in 1996.
“She was only 21. Darcie was a great kid. I know everyone says nice things about a loved one that has passed, but she really was an amazing person. Just ask anyone who knew her. She was always helping any and everyone. She loved kids and could not wait to have her own,” wrote Nicole on the Walk like MADD Web site.
Since there is no local walk in Houlton directly affiliated with Walk Like MADD, friends and family members in Houlton will join “The Darcie Connection” along with Nicole in North Carolina. Martha Bell said “Darcie was like a sister to me. Since there are many people here in Houlton who knew Darcie, we want to help raise awareness about drunk driving and remember her.” Bell said although donations can be made on Walk Like MADD’s Web site, friends can simply join the walk with making a donation,  remember Darcie and help raise awareness.
Nicole, who lives in North Carolina, said Team Darcie-Making a Difference has a $5,000 goal for the 5K Walk Like MADD in Raleigh.
At presstime, nearly $2,800 had been raised. To support the effort which goes toward training, education and victim assistance, visit: www.walklikemadd.com. Then, click “view all events,” go to Raleigh, North Carolina Walk like MADD followed by Team Darcie-Making a Difference.
