EASTON NEWS

AN ATV safety training course is being held May 5 and 6 from 6-9 p.m. at the Odd Fellow’s Hall, 23 Station Rd. in Easton. All individuals 10-15 years of age are encouraged to attend. Anyone interested please call Harold Kierstead at 488-6853 or Budd Nicholson at 488-6822. This course is sponsored by the Easton ATV Club.
The Easton Kiwanis Club met on Tuesday, April 6, with nine members present. A ham supper prepared by Loris Allen was enjoyed by all. The salute to the flag was led by young Karson Winger and the prayer was given by Bernard Hussey. There was not much in the way of business. President Mike Allen reminded the group that it was time for dues. A letter was received from the secretary about pro-rating the dues.
The most-discussed item was about whether the group would have a table at the Home and Garden Show at the Forum in Presque Isle on April 16 and 17. The president said the only thing he could suggest was to put gasoline cards up on tickets for a raffle. It was decided to decline. The meeting ended early. Those present were: Mike and Loris Allen, and grandson, Karson; Keith and Esther Richardson; Clair and Eldora Carter; Harold Clark; and Bernard Hussey.
The Easton Happy Days Club met at the West Ridge Manor recreation room with 15 members and two guests present.
After the usual great luncheon meal, the speakers, Regina Cameron and Rebecca Lagassie — who had only been on the job for two weeks with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) — opened the talk with information from the Internet. Cameron came from Montana to work. Legassie, who has spoken to the group before, informed them that they are in need of more volunteers. The Easton Senior Citizens’ Club does have people who are on the list of volunteers: Rena Richardson, Ezalee Smith, Lindy Fowler, Nina Trask and Marie Hewitt.
Legassie explained to the group that this was a corporation for national and community service and that it improves the lives of those who need help as well as those who give the help. She said that there is a significant relationship between volunteering and good health. They left material and urged the members to think about joining and suggesting it to their friends. She encouraged them to keep their time as this meant a lot of help to the volunteer program in the way of financing.
After the speakers left, President Nina Trask opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and the singing of “America” played on the piano by Liana Demerchant. Ida Doak called the roll with these members present: Nina and John Trask, Liana and Paul Demerchant, Clair and Eldora Carter, Glenice Craig, Lindy Fowler, Ezalee Smith, Rena Richardson, Rogena Thomas, Helen Cleaves, Joann Johnson, Marie Hewitt and Ida Doak.
Eldora Carter read the secretary’s report and Ida Doak read the treasurer’s report. Both were accepted as read.
The president read a note from Steve Farnham, from the Aroostook Area Agency on Aging, that he would like the chance to speak to the group on the changes in health care. She also read a note from Harold Saucier, president of the Northern Council of Senior Citizens, with an invitation to attend their meal and meeting on April 19, at the Knight’s of Columbus building in Fort Fairfield. The Easton Club has not participated in the Northern Council for several years.
The president also read a thank-you card from the Northern Maine Dialysis Center for the donation made last meeting.
John Trask had taken the past-members plaque out to be updated. He reported that Clarence Richardson’s name was already on the plaque, but Harold Ireland’s was not, so his name was put on along with Hilda Langely and Olive Bolster.
There was some discussion about the kitchen stove but it was decided that that was not up to the club and it was fine for what it was used for. The group brought items for the dialysis program for their Beano games that they played while they underwent their procedures.
The president took a list of names of those who plan to go to the Anderson’s Restaurant in Canada on Thursday, April 22. She needed the list of those who will be going so she can tell the restaurant on how many to expect, so make your reservations and bring your crossing card. The bus will be leaving the Manor at 10:15 a.m.
