The Probus Club of Central Aroostook met on March 18 at 10 a.m. at Reed Commons, NMCC, with President Margaret Woodman presiding and 20 members present. Pearl Carmichael read two humorous pieces of Golden Age poetry. The treasurer’s report was accepted as given. Mel Fitzherbert spoke on the need of expanding our membership, and reminded us that guests are always welcome. He brought up the topic of Maine Public Service and its latest development, suggesting the importance of having a speaker from that facility who would give us more information on the impact this merger will have on our community and surrounding areas.
He then introduced our guest speaker, Robert Clark, executive director of Northern Maine Development Commission, who presented pertinent information concerning this organization.
From its beginning in 1969, NMDC has been an economic driving force for the communities of northern Maine. The organization now employs approximately 25 people and has offices in Caribou, Houlton and Fort Kent.
Its three major objectives are concerned with alternative energy, informational technology and high-value agriculture.
NMDC is a valuable source for those concerned with assisting and promoting small businesses, transactional development and environmental issues. They work with regional planning for better transportation routes, including recreational trails and upkeep of scenic turnouts, as well as assisting in training for town planning boards. Their work with business finance, providing loans and consultations when needed, is as vital as their work with health care and money for college students. Along this path, the organization’s interest and support for Momentum Aroostook — young professionals interested in activities in the county — is to be noted.
NMDC is funded by local, state and federal funds. This group has brought new business to the area and enabled others to expand, grow and make a difference in our area.
Clark responded to questions from the group and Fitzherbert presented him with a certificate of appreciation on behalf of Probus.
President Woodman asked for short oral biographies to be given from the members. No new business was presented and the meeting was adjourned.
