Former Houlton coach, players to be inducted into Hall of Fame

Former SAD 29 coach and teacher, John Donato, along with Houlton graduates Jim Anderson and Brian Carpenter are among past Woostock Shiretowners baseball team members being inducted Saturday into the Woodstock Sports Hall of Fame.
The Woodstock Shiretowners, a Canadian Senior Baseball League team in Woodstock, N.B. won the league title in 1979.
Anderson, a southpaw,  is a 1981 Houlton graduate, while Carpenter is a 1972 graduate.
Carpenter caught for the high school team and played under Donato. He lives in Bangor and is Lubec High School’s superintendent.
Donato coached the Houlton Shiretowners for 25 years, winning two Eastern Maine titles. He also coached the Houlton High School girls basketball program for 17 years where the Lady Shires accumulated 11 regional titles and five state championships. He is currently coaching the Mt. View girls basketball team and teaching at Lawrence High School.
Donato played baseball in high school, pitching at Middleboro High in Massachusetts and later at Ricker College in Houlton. He was a two-time all-conference selection at Ricker his junior and senior years and he also played in the Boston Park and Cape Cod leagues.
