Ricker Rumblings
by Lois Downing
Fourth of July! What a wonderful holiday for everybody. The town is full of family, visitors, guests and other people. What a great gathering for Midnight Madness. We could hear the boom, booms of the people in the park too! It was refreshing, so I thought.
Shirley Nason has been enjoying her family: sister and sister-in-law, Wilessa and Sharon from Connecticut. They all went for breakfast on Sunday and they had a great time for three days. Shirley certainly enjoyed them.
A special gathering of Ricker people and some guests were in attendance on Saturday, July 3, here in the parking lot. Brian (Henderson) grilled hot dogs and hamburgers which we all enjoyed. And oh, that strawberry shortcake that Charlene served. With real biscuits too! It was delicious. The rain held off too and the day was fun filled. Helen Brewer of Madigan Home Health Care, formerly of Ricker Plaza, was a guest, as was Joyce Hughes, mother of Jane. (Hope I didn’t leave anyway out)
Tess, sister-in-law of Donna Burns, has been a frequent visitor of hers. Two of her grandchildren were here recently too. Helena Nickerson had a fast trip to the hospital one night last week. Lena said it was painful but we hope she is feeling better now.
I’m a fan of Larry King, CNN on TV. He has announced his retirement. I, or one, will miss him. He always had the latest people on his CNN program, “Larry King Live.”
Doris Hogan attended a funeral for a friend one day last week. Paul Armstrong and Carolyn Carmichael attended his granddaughter’s wedding on Wednesday. Paul was the one who gave her away. Lavina Byron’s son and daughter-in-law were here for three days from Benton. Their names are Roger and Laurie with Elayna and Lydia.
On July 2, Norma Bates had 23 people in her apartment, all family. Some of the guests were James and Chris Vachon and twins, Margo and Claire from Indianapolis, Indiana. Norma reported they had a wonderful time.
I came across this little tidbit “Have you ever wished you could be an angel? You can easily do it. Just help someone in need and never tell a soul about it.”
In our garden we must have thyme; thyme for each other, thyme for family, thyme for friends. Water freely with patience and love!
What about the Red Sox? So many of their players are on the DL (disabled list). But, all in all, they are doing well. So enjoy them. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Loiselle of Ellsworth are visitors of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Armand Blanchette for the holiday.
My Bible verse for the week is from Matthew: “And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. And Jesus said unto him: The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.” (Matthew 8:19, 20.
Have a wonderful and safe week whrever you are and whatever you do.

Mary Lou Pomeroy and daughter, Jane Foster, have returned home to Caribou after visiting with Riva Hawkes and Patti Hartin.
Joanne (Jenkins) Wood and husband, Ed, and three grandchildren, have spent several days at their cottage on upper Mattawamkeag Lake. Returning home to New Hampshire on July 1 and planning on returning later on in the summer. While here they did some kayaking on the lake and also enjoyed a swim at Vacationland Estates.
Had to refill the hummingbird feeder again and do not plan to put too many sunflower seeds in my other feeders as it seems to attract too many of the pigeons we have here in the area. Did see a mother deer and her fawn way down near the woods one day last week. The children from New Hampshire were quite thrilled when the deer appeared the day they arrived in town and were at my house. Will not put any apples out for them as I’m sure they are finding enough to eat now.
