American Legion Post 27
seeking families of military members
FORT FAIRFIELD – Are you the mother, father, husband or wife of a current U.S. military member? Do you live in Fort Fairfield? The American Legion Post 27 (Fort Fairfield) is looking for families of current active duty, reserve or guard members. The post will be presenting Blue Star Banners to families of military members during the upcoming Maine Potato Blossom Festival. The Blue Star Service Banner is an official banner authorized by the Department of Defense for display by families who have members serving in the Armed Forces during any period of war or hostilities the United States may be engaged in for the duration of such hostilities.

The Service flag, also called the Blue Star Flag, was designed and patented by WWI Army Captain Robert L. Queisser of the 5th Ohio Infantry who had two sons serving on the front line. The flag quickly became the unofficial symbol of a child in service.
During WWII, the practice of displaying the service flag became much more widespread. The Department of Defense updated the guidelines in December 1967 with a directive, which implemented an Act of Congress officially authorizing the service flag.
The American Legion is rekindling the spirit of pride in our military men and women following the horrific terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The American Legion is providing banners to families in communities across the nation. Today families who have a loved one serving in the armed forces including the National Guard or reserves of all military departments display Blue Star Service Banners.
If you live in Fort Fairfield and you have a family member currently serving in the armed forces (active duty, National Guard or reserve), please contact Post Adjutant Trisha Scull at 551-6864 for more information.
