Aroostook Times
Annual event — Mrs. A.E. Astle of High Street gave her annual dinner party to the old ladies of the Free Baptist Church last week. Owing to the unpleasant weather several of those invited were unable to attend.
Real estate — L.F. Hall has sold his store and farm in Littleton to Harvard E. Tingley who will continue the business. The sale was made through the A.O. Briggs agency.
New business — Mr. Paul Taylor, who has had much experience as a tailor, has opened a place of business in the Gray Block and is prepared to do first class work for ladies and gentlemen.

County gridiron championship — Piling up a total of 85 points while their opponents were scoring but 25 and losing only to the strong Stearns High outfit of Millinocket, the Tibbetts-coached Eleven of Houlton High again won the Spudland Championship. This was the fifth time in seven years.
Smyrna Mills — The general store of E.V. Noyes was completely destroyed by fire from an overheated stove on the second floor. A bucket brigade formed by citizens made a valiant fight to halt the blaze, but the high winds made it impossible.

Commendation — A special letter of commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation was presented to Linda Lovely and Theodore Mason for outstanding composite scores in the National Merit Test. They are students at Houlton High School.GRADUATES — The sixth graduating class of the Houlton Beauty Academy of 21 State Street, received its diplomas at ceremonies at the Northland Hotel. Shown presenting the first diploma is Mrs. Pauline Hoyt, owner of the school to Iola Kneeland of Littleton. Seated beside her is Judy Watson, also of Littleton. Standing, June Ann Cummings, Hazel Carroll and Alfreda Berube, all of Houlton.
Enlists — Five area youths recently enlisted in the Regular Army according to an announcement made by Sgt. 1st Class Joseph Milewski, Army recruiter from Presque Isle. They are: Justin Williams, Richard Roy, Phillip M. Grant, Gary Anderson and Thomas Joseph.
Snow — Monday’s northeaster left a heavy windswept blanket of eight inches of snow accompanied by winds over 35 miles per hour causing havoc with highway travel, closing schools, canceling meetings and otherwise bringing a forceful reminder to residents the balmy autumn weather has passed and winter has arrived.

PGA program — Paul F. Donahue, head golf professional at Oakley Country Club in Watertown, Mass. has announced that his assistant, Terrance A. Adams, formerly of Houlton has been accepted in the Professional Golfers Association apprentice program. Adams is a 1981 graduate of Houlton High School and a 1984 graduate of the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Terry is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William S. Adams.
Golden Arches — Dawn and Ed Degenhardt will be celebrating 10 years of McDonalds in Houlton this week.
A first — Robert and Rainie Aucoin opened their auto body repair shop on Bangor Street with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Math award — Lance Little, a senior at the University of Maine at Orono, is one of six UMO students to be recognized for excellence in mathematics. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Little.
