On April 3, the fourth Lenten breakfast was held at the Whittier Congregational Church with Elinor Savage heading this one. The menu included Juice, fruit cup, bacon (cooked by Elinor) eggs, homemade bread toasted, bran muffins and onion hash. Elinor was assisted by Marion Hoar, who faithfully waits on tables during the Lenten season; Verna Boone, jack of all trades; Reneva Smith, who did the toast; and Margaret Phillips.
A happy crowd enjoyed all this and our Catholic friends are still attending every breakfast and all enjoy the fellowship, which goes on during the morning.
Shelly Stevens is still at home recuperating from her surgery and last report was that she is progressing nicely The foot of snow we received this past week is slowly melting as the sun came out for a day or two to help it along. And I am once again going to Vacationland Estates to enjoy the pool there, now that the threat of icy roads has gone. My friend, John White, has gone all winter as he has a 4-wheel drive, and was happy to have me return.
The birds are still around, but don’t seem as hungry as they were when it was colder. Still put out lots of birdseed, but it doesn’t go as fast. Now have five deer that appear regularly in my back yard and, of course, the same three arrive about 5:45 p.m. to get their snack. The new foot of snow slowed them down a bit as they came toward the house and they took their time. Have one deer that goes to the edge of the woods and lies down for awhile and just watches as the other deer nibble whatever they can find.

Ricker Rumblings
by Lois Downing
Some of my friends and readers have been reminding me of their not reading any Ricker Rumblings for awhile. So, I’m back again and here it is!
Oh, the weather. What a topic. On Friday of last week, it was like a “whiteout”, with the snow. In a couple hours, the cars in the parking lot were covered. Are you tired of snow? I’m sure many of us are—it can’t be too long before we’ll see the end of it and we will certainly welcome spring, even though it is already here, according to the calendar. (thanks to the angels who cleaned off the cars)
Was talking to Mary Cowperthwaite the other day. She informed me that she is making and dying Easter eggs. She also said that her mother and father, Marion and Al Cowperthwaite are going to be having their 70th wedding anniversary soon. I don’t know the exact date. Happy anniversary to this well known couple.
Our sympathy is extended to Ronnie and Norma Suitter and family in the loss of their daughter and sister, Brenda Putnam. Brenda, I’m told, was a victim of cancer, that awful C word. Brenda will be missed tremendously by family and friends.
Blaine Johnson has been showing off pictures of his granddaughter, Denver Johnson. She is a few months old and a beauty.
Our Ricker windows are decorated with pictures of flowers and animals and pretty too, I might add. Had a nice notice from Shirley Smith Ethier the other day. Shirley is now married to Roger Ethier and the ceremony took place March 12 in Cary at the home of her brother, Lyman Morris. Shirley and Roger are now living in Oakfield. After the ceremony, the bride and bridegroom plus the attendants, Don and Millie Cleary of Hodgdon, all dined at the Vault Restaurant. Best wishes to Roger and Shirley on their marriage.
Nora Estabrook died a few weeks ago. Nora was a sister to Jeannie Stacy and the both of them were diners at the Meals on Wheels when it was in operation here at Ricker. Nora had a lot of family and she will be missed too. Our sympathy is extended to all.
Houlton Pioneer Times readers will miss the great stories provided by Elna Seabrooks. Saw Elna a few days ago and she is looking great. We all miss your stories, Elna. You did such a great job!
I can’t put the pen up without mentioning Elizabeth Taylor, great movie star and personality who died last month. She was an exceptional person, beautiful and so generous.
Patricia Royal of Cary has been growing roses and they are in her back yard! She has left many post cards in our church and the pictures of these flowers are beautiful.
Here is a little tip: if a grease fire started on your stove, you should slide a lid over the pan, remove it from the burner using a high cuff oven mitt, then turn off the burner. (Water and grease don’t mix.)
Did I mention Emma Sanders? She was a tenant at Ricker for a long time, then went to Madigan where she died a few weeks ago. She was 100! God bless Emma and all her family.
Linda Beaupre, a former tenant of Ricker Plaza, won $100 recently. She was so happy and looked great.
Hello to all our friends in the nursing home—Dean and Helen, and all the others.
Every raindrop that falls is accompanied by an angel. (Mohammed)
Keep well and watch out for the ice (there is still some out there).
