Owls place 2nd in Sunrise tourney
WESTON, Mass. — The Owl softball team made it to the championship game of the Sunrise Conference softball tournament played over the weekend, but fell short of the title with an 8-0 loss to SUNY-Canton.
Tina DeLuca tossed a one-hit shutout as the Roos dominated the contest.
Krista Coffin
UMPI pitcher Krista Coffin went the distance on the mound and walked three and struck out one batter while allowing 11 hits.
The only Owl player to manage a hit was Carolynn Tuck.
Brittany Humphrey
With the loss, UMPI’s season ended with a 14-13 overall record under coach Terry Cummings.
The Owls opened the tourney with a 5-0 win over Fisher College Friday. Desiree Smith and Lainey Herring both had two hits and Brittany Humphrey drove in two for the winners.
Emily Moore got the pitching win by striking out six and allowing just four hits in seven innings of work.

On Saturday, UMPI dropped a 7-0 decision to SUNY-Canton. Coffin suffered the pitching loss as she surrendered 10 hits and gave up five walks while striking out three in her six-inning stint.
Kellie Peers, Danielle and Brittany Humphrey and Moore all had hits for the Owls.

Both Humphrey twins, Tuck and Coffin were named to the Sunrise Conference all-conference squad.
In their third game of the tournament, the Owls slammed Fisher, 9-1. A seven-run third inning rally was the key. Moore had two hits and three RBIs and Danielle Humphrey had two hits and scored twice to lead the way. Moore again gained the win on the hill. She gave up only three hits in her five innings.
