Spring is the season we all wait for, hoping for the months of March and April to arrive, pushing aside the long winter season, but May is often what we all impatiently wait for. It’s a month that brings, hopefully flowers, buds on the trees, lawns turning green and of course dandelions.

May also brings with it, warmer days (or at least longer ones), the days are filled with end-of-the-year programs as schools wind down for the year; Memorial Day is fast approaching and the promise of graduation becomes much clearer. May also brings Mother’s Day, with it’s special surprise gifts from children, some gifts are homemade, others purchased during a secret trip to Mom’s favorite store accompanied by Dad or other family members. During Mother’s Day weekend, there is also the annual Mother/Son Dance, sponsored by the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department.

FS-SON-dc6-AR-20Chauffeured by their Moms, the young men escorted their ‘dates’ for the evening into the Wellness Center, where the music, supplied by Music -X-Press beckoned them into the gymnasium for a very energy-filled evening of dancing, laughs —  and special smiles.

Dressed in an array of styles including dress pants with razor sharp creases, jeans, khaki and shorts accented by  ties, bow-ties, spiffy looking chapeaus, sport jackets, vests, sneakers, dress shoes and sandals; the young dancers proved their moms proud.FS-SON_dc14-AR-20

As the evening unfolded the couples danced to the music of rock ‘n’ roll, a little disco, a dash of rap, a few ‘slow’ songs, the Macarena and the Twist. Regardless of the music or the moves, it was a very special time for mothers and sons.

FS-SON-dc15-AR_20In a time when everyday is busy, filled with work, school, family and friends we often regret that we have felt so hurried when it came to certain things — we are all guilty of wishing the days away — waiting for the weekend, a vacation or special event — then we find ourselves wishing that we could turn back the clock.

As the days, months and years continue on, we find that all so suddenly, that little boy who took us to the Mother/Son Dance has traded his red wagon, big wheel or bicycle in for a pickup and we are no longer the person he escorts to a dance, but we believe he stills remembers our ‘date.FS-SON-dc7-AR-20

A gentle reminder to all the sons — remember that as you grow up (in spite of your mother) keep these kinds of memories close, take them out and think about them because as your future unfolds and no matter where your journey takes you — you will always be in your mother’s heart — and often on her mind — no matter how old you are.FS-SON_dc10-AR-20
