PRESQUE ISLE — The Maine Better Transportation Association will host a gathering on Thursday, Aug. 4, beginning at 3:30 p.m., at the Northeastland Hotel in Presque Isle, focusing on sustainable practices in Aroostook County and statewide.
“Higher education in Aroostook County has become high energy, as the region’s two major colleges — Northern Maine Community College and the University of Maine at Presque Isle — have launched several highly-publicized and innovative energy initiatives. Our guest speakers will be Donald N. Zillman, president of UMPI, and Timothy D. Crowley, president of NMCC,” said Deanna Perrow, administrative assistant, MBTA.
Each speaker will share their own experience with renewable energy projects.
“Zillman and Crowley will talk about their schools’ steps to lead the way to a more sustainable energy future from two new energy education programs to capital investments in campus energy facilities,” she said.
The schedule for the event includes a board meeting at 3:30 p.m., with a reception at 5 p.m., followed at 6 p.m. by the dinner and program.
The MBTA is also seeking nominations for its Wednesday, Nov. 2, achievement awards event.
“On Nov. 2, members of Maine’s transportation community will gather to honor leaders in our field — individuals who have made a significant contribution to the state’s transportation system through their vision, leadership, commitment and hard work. This is a lifetime achievement award and the association is soliciting nominees,” said Perrow.
The organization has been honoring individuals for the past 25 years who’ve made a difference in the transportation industry. Past honorees include Dana Connors, president, Maine State Chamber of Commerce, in 1994 and former MBTA President Kenneth Burrill in 1999.
The MBTA is requesting nominations by Aug. 5. Send them to: MBTA, 146 State St., Augusta, ME 04330, fax 623-2928 or e-mail Deanna@mbtaonline.org.
