Smith earns Gold Award
PRESQUE ISLE — Haley Smith of Presque Isle has earned the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award for her community service initiative titled “Fun with ABC’s at the Discovery Museum.”
“The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award that a Girl Scout may earn and represents her personal journey of leadership, career explorations, self-improvement and service,” said Joan McDonald, CEO, Girl Scouts of Maine. “To earn the award, a girl must spend a minimum of 65 hours planning and carrying out her project. For many, the leadership skills, organizational skills, and sense of community and commitment that come from ‘going for the Gold’ set the foundation for a lifetime of active citizenship. Haley’s project is amazing and, on behalf of Girl Scouts of the USA, we’re delighted to present her with the Gold Award.”
The goal of Smith’s project was to enhance early childhood literacy.
“I wanted to reinforce the fact that reading is fun,” said Smith. “To do that, I selected a book for each letter of the alphabet and then created a craft, game, song or fun activity to accompany the story in the book. I was able to present reading and activity sessions from my project at daycare centers, elementary schools, libraries, and at luncheons and trade shows. Once completed, I donated the project to the Caribou Children’s Discovery Museum,” said Smith.
Smith is the daughter of Frank and Roxann Smith of Presque Isle. She has been a Girl Scout for 10 years and a member of Troop 81.
She will be entering the Senior Class at Presque Isle High School in the fall.
