Close games mark the start of the high school soccer season

The Caribou Vikings boys’ soccer squad has yet to play a regular season game, but other teams in the region have played a few meaningful games.

Recapping some games played through Monday, Aug. 22:

Washburn 6, Wisdom 1 — Mitchell Worcester scored three goals and recorded two assists Monday night to propel the Washburn Beavers past the Wisdom Pioneers. Jordan McLaughlin chipped in with two goals for the 2-0-1 winners and Nick Bragg added a goal. Cameron Bragg notched two assists and Noah Farley had one. Zach Davis made 10 saves on 14 shots.

CAHS 4, Washburn 4 (4OT) — At Washburn on Friday, Spencer Stetson scored the game-tying goal for the Panthers with 11:04 remaining in the game as Central Aroostook of Mars Hill and Washburn battled to a tie through two overtimes.

Down at the half, the Panthers answered with goals from Mike McClung and Daniel Brewer midway through the second half. Joe Stiles scored the first-half goal while Brendan York recorded an assist on Stetson’s goal. Ross Grass made two saves on 11 shots. Jordan McLaughlin posted two goals in the first half for 1-0-1 Washburn.

Anthony Viola and Mitchell Worcester each added a goal. Zach Davis stopped five on 17 shots.

Van Buren 2, Limestone/MSSM 0 — Limestone Community School/MSSM drops to 1-1 on the year after falling to the Van Buren Crusader 2-0 on Friday evening in Limestone.

Washburn 3, Easton 1 — On Wednesday in Easton, Washburn’s Jordan McLaughlin had the hat trick as the Beavers dropped Easton 3-1 in the season opener for both teams.

Cody Halvorson scored the lone goal for the Bears.

Limestone/MSSM 2, Fort Fairfield 0 — At Limestone Wednesday, the Eagles kicked off their season with a 2-0 win over the Fort Fairfield Tigers. Limestone Community High School/Maine School of Science and Mathematics goal scorers were Brandon Nadeau and Tristan Kirk.
