Ordinance has gone too far

To the editor:

There is a local ordinance in effect that is a reactionary measure to the sting operations on the local vendors selling liquor to police-paid youths who acted as a trigger mechanism to entrap clerks/stores into selling to under-age “customers.”

This ordinance directs liquor dealers to program cash registers to register liquor sales only after clerk solicits date of birth from the buyer irrespective of age category; or cards the customer.

If this is indicative of the extent of degeneration that law enforcement and the legislative leadership have regressed to, then it’s time for an in-depth qualitative, moral, philosophical change before we totally lose our moral compass bearings.

There are four aspects/forces in play here:

1. Sets example to younger generations on how to deal with public.

2. Defies good judgment; disrespects seniors.

3. Demonstrates the quality of moral fiber local leaders lack.

4. Erodes liquor sales due to some customers refusing/rejecting this ordinance on principle.

Anything is harmful and counterproductive when used to excess or in the wrong way, contrary to intended, useful benefit. People, police and town councilors should conduct essential business in a spirit of cooperation, not combatively. Repeal it.
