100 Years Ago-Sept. 20, 1911
Aroostook Times

    New elevator — A.H. Fogg Co. are having installed this week an electric freight elevator. The work is being done by workmen from Massachusetts.
    Construction — D.J. Connors has purchased of John Tenney some house lots on River Street and will build three houses this season. Good progress has been made on one house and excavations are being made for the second one.
    Customers — Chas. W. Starkey’s patrons are much pleased with his meat slicing machine which shaves smoked meats of all kinds.
75 Years Ago- Sept. 17, 1936

    Convention — The sixty-second annual convention of the Maine Woman’s Christian Temperance Union is being held in Houlton. More than 100 delegates will attend.
    Sherman — Clothing and sporting goods of an estimated value of $1,500 were stolen from Bishop’s Store early Saturday morning by thieves.
    New store — Gokauf’s will swing its doors wide open to accommodate motorists who have waited patiently for an automotive accessory shop of this kind. They will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday until 10 p.m.
    Past Matrons — A six o’clock supper was served in the Masonic dining room at which time Past Matrons of Sherman were honored and were as follows: Jennie Shonfield, Millie Bowers, Ella Bowers, Mary Patterson, Madeline Curtis, Ella Corliss, Gladys Sleeper, Margaret Greaves, Lulu Caldwell, Mabel Martin and Pearl Gosnell.
50 Years Ago- Sept. 21, 1961
Houlton Pioneer Times

    Lost home — Fire made 33 Canadian potato pickers, employed by Harry E. Bass of Houlton, homeless temporarily when flames destroyed a converted granary on the McIntyre Road on the former Dickinson farm near Cary’s Mills.
    Church Sesquicentennial — The First Church of Houlton (Congregational-Unitarian) will observe its 150th anniversary with special services. Rev. Robert Blake, pastor, will serve as host.
    Airport manager — Linwood Lawrence, airport manager since 1958 at the Houlton International Airport accepted a post as aviation inspector for the Insurance Co. of North America. He will begin his duties in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
    Ricker College — The local college will open its doors to approximately 140 new students, about 120 of whom will be entering the most selective freshman class in the senior college’s 12-year history.

    Semi-finalists — Lee S. Kilpatrick of Houlton High School and Christopher Sincerbeaux of Central Aroostook High School have been selected as semi-finalists in the 1987 Merit Scholarship program.

The positions are from left, Jennifer Willette, librarian; Noel Allen, librarian; Tiffany Karnes, assistant manager; Jennifer McPhee, manager and Terri Hemore, librarian. Director of the chorus is Mrs. Barbara Hogan.

    Postmaster — Leigh Cummings, Jr. was installed as the 22nd Postmaster at Houlton. He began his career in 1971 as a postal assistant.
    Rotary Auction — Paul Adams will serve as the general chairman of the 31st annual Rotary Radio Auction.
    Author — Mimi Gregoire Carpenter, a realist painter with a microcosmic vision of the Maine seacoast was a guest in the second-grade class of Hollie McPartland at Houlton Elementary School. She has written and illustrated three children’s books.
