WEST LAFAYETTE, IN – Vernon A. Tarbell, 83, of West Lafayette, IN, died at 7:35 p.m. Tuesday, September 20, 2011, at Indiana Veterans Home in West Lafayette, IN.
He was born October 15, 1927, in Mapleton, to the late Marvin and Nettie Roix Tarbell.
He served in the United States Army from February 20, 1946 to April 20, 1947. While in Japan, he was an honor guard for General Douglas McArthur.
He graduated from Business College in Maine.
His first marriage was to Margaret Scribner, who died April 15, 1969. Then on September 12, 1969, he married Irene Burch. She died February 3, 2003.
Vernon was an accountant for Silvers Garage in Presque Isle. After that, he was an accountant for several motels in the Raleigh Durham, NC area.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 492, and a past member of the Masonic Lodge in Maine and was the past president of the State School Board of Maine. He enjoyed playing and watching sports.
Surviving are five daughters: Candy Welch (husband Jim), and Terry Morrison, both of South Portland, Nita Page of Gardiner, Sheila Roy of Standish, and Jenine Woodruff of Lafayette, IN; four sons: Vernon Tarbell Jr. of Portland, Jay Tarbell of Massa, AZ, Mark Tarbell of Burlington, Mass, and Christopher Burch (wife Mary) of Jeffersonville, IN; a sister, Marvia Kofstad (husband Ron) of Presque Isle; two brothers: Lester Tarbell (wife Elsie) of Ft. Myers, FL and Beryl Tarbell (wife Barb) of Port Orchard, WA. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, David Rush and Scott Woodruff.
