Owl teams lose home contests to UM-Fort Kent
It was homecoming weekend on the campus of the University of Maine Presque Isle this past weekend and the University of Maine Fort Kent soccer team came to play for the coveted “Potato Barrel.”
UMPI goalkeeper Taylor Ussery did everything she could to keep her team close in the first half of Saturday’s 6-1 loss against the Bengals. Ussery survived three straight shots on goal in rapid fire, a penalty kick, and an apparent goal that was then negated by an offside call to keep the game scoreless for much of the first half.
But the Bengals, 7-0-1, finally broke through in the 32nd minute with a goal by Donike Ferriera. A second Fort Kent goal by Whitney Sinclair before half, put the game out of reach for the Owls, now 3-4.
The win allowed Fort Kent to retain the ‘Potato Barrel,” awarded annually to the winner of the match between the two schools.
UMPI will play next on the road Friday, Sept. 30 and Saturday, Oct. 1 when they have back-to-back contests at SUNY-Canton.
The UMPI men didn’t have it any easier against Fort Kent. Eight second half goals scored by the Bengals blew open what had been a close game and gave them a 10-2 victory, spoiling homecoming for the Owls.
Germaine Chambers and Craig Maffei scored for the 2-5 Owls.
The UMPI men play next on Friday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at SUNY-Canton.
