Composting at School Farm
To the editor:
It is interesting to read all of the articles about the landfill capacity in Presque Isle.
Recently, there was an article about the high cost to MSAD 1 for trash removal. I believe part of the answer can be found at the school farm. With 32 acres, surely there is room for a composting operation.
This is a win/win solution. Suitable kitchen waste would be collected from the cafeterias, composted at the farm and turned into the soil. Students would learn how compost is handled and, possibly, encourage their parents to make compost at home. Perhaps composting worms, such as red wigglers, could be brought into the program as both a learning tool and a source of income.
Composting is easy and such an efficient way to keep vegetable waste out of the landfill. Kitchen waste is biodegradable, but not so much when it’s “entombed” in a plastic bag at the landfill.
